I called the orthodontist reception after being refered by another doctor and was informed that they take Bonitas, I called and spoke to the receptionist and I enquired about my daughter's braces, they advised that I can come for xrays first and the doctor will give me a full report about the procedure, my first question I asked the receptionist was that who is going to pay for the xray and I was advised that it will take from the medical aid, I made an appointment successfully and went in. We arrived and before I could fill out the form my daughter was already taken for xray and I'm thinking how is that possible as they have not authorised with my medical aid, Hugo orthodontist only asked for authorisation after sending us the xrays and my medical aid declined to pay as they said he is a specialist my plan is not covered, that information should have been requested before continuation so that i can make an informed decision about proceeding, I have been sent bills of R3200 to settle until they sent me to lawyers, I'm not happy with being misled and I believe I was ****med to do the xrays because I thought the medical aid will cover, I'm realy disappointed and not happy about being ****med.

I just want to give an honest opinion and perhaps save someone the trauma and regret I now have to live with. I’m undergoing treatment here. I had done my homework as best I could, before I approached this practice. But there are a few things I could not have known that would have really helped me. I hope I can pass these along to you so you are not in my position one day. 1. There is no standard professional consultation They will email you a treatment plan that you either accept or… I guess you just see what else youl do with yourself. Just like that. It’s very unprofessional to never have a chance to discuss your treatment with your doctor. They will tell you if you want to see the doctor in person you must pay extra. Later when you complain they will back paddle and say you could have seen the doctor various other ways they did not initially tell you about.Il tell you the affect this will have later. 2. The appointments are rushed and you won’t have time to think things through that are being done to you to be able to make good decisions. Their business model is about pushing numbers so patient care gets compromised for profit. 3. The doctor will keep information from you, or give you limited information so that you arnt able to decide things for yourself because you are perpetually in the dark about what is happening to you because as per point one. Nothing is discussed with you directly- it’s just done to you and you hope it will all be ok later. You decide to trust the process and trust that what they have decided without your input will look good on you. You hope it will look good on your face. 4. They don’t apologize when they have done wrong. They justify their poor treatment by telling you that they charge medical aid rates?? I guess to them that means you are disempowered because they are doing you a favour by charging you less than others. In other words “you get what you pay for, if you want good management go somewhere else where youl pay more” I don’t understand this perspective. 5 Even when you voice your complaints they are dismissed because the doctor knows best even though it’s your face and smile🤷🏽♀️. When you pluck up the courage to confront him-he will even tell you -I wish people would just do what I frikken tell them to do. My teeth and smile have been messed up by these people. I went from a confident smiley type of person-to someone that hides behind my hand when I smile. My self esteem and confidence has been disturbed to a point that my family is suggesting I go to therapy. Please listen to me. If ever you go to any doctor especially for cosmetic work and you never get to discuss and have a consultation with them, red flag. Run! Really there are so many people doing the same thing, that you will find someone that will listen to your needs and wants and still charge reasonably. Personally even if it’s slightly more, rather pay alittle extra than sit in regret like me. I’m still confused and thinking what il do about what has happened to me as a result of trusting this practice with my most personal aspect of my personality and appearance. I just wanted to forewarn some people out there that were like me and were blinded by how nice the place looks and how nice their IT system is etc and gave up too much faith in a process that excludes you and your thoughts and options from day one.

Everyone is giving a good review on the professionalism. And they are right. The support staff are good. But if you want to be heard and get a personalised treatment plan-this is not the place for you. At no point, even at the initial consultation do they ask you what you actually want. It’s a one size fits all smile that is prescribed out for you and that you get. If you want to voice your opinion on what you want, you will have to book an additional special appointment and pay extra for it. I’m disappointed at my treatment so far because I’m not getting what I actually approached this practice for-and no one cares to find out. It’s very strange. The first thing any medical field practice asks is why YOU are there. What is troubling YOU. How can we help you/ what don’t you like about your teeth/ what dont you like/ what would you like us to change etc etc etc. Any variety of question where they ascertain why you have approached the practice. >R20 000.00 is a lot to pay to get the smile someone else wants for you … The conveyer belt begins with the consultation. Pictures are taken of your mouth and teeth. You are rushed into another room where a dentist/orthodontis? sees the pictures and comments on them and tells you what emails you will receive in a week or so detailing your treatment plan and how much it will cost. This is the first experience of how rushed things are. Not once are you asked what you like and what you would like to keep of your existing teeth and smile and what you would like to change. At this point you assume that at some point after they have given you their treatment plan that you will discuss what you want out of the experience. Surely you will be asked what YOU want. Next you come for brace fitting. A nice video is shown then onto the conveyer belt where braces are fitted. You’re alittle perplexed that you are getting these fitted but you still haven’t had a real consultation-a patient to doctor discussion where expectations are discussed, your wants are discussed and treatment goals are established with your input. You haven’t even met your treating doctor! The assistants fits your braces. Dr Hugo only comes to check their work. While you are laying under the dentist chair lights with your mouth ajar. Dr Hugo with no greeting or acknowledgment of your existence- no expected meeting and discussion about what you have come for- makes some comments to the assistant and leaves. No exaggeration before you have even thought ‘is this my doctor? looks like him’ he is gone. Not one word exchanged. No patient to doctor consultation At All! Second appointment. Again pushed in and worked on at lightening speed. The Dr Hugo comes with a drill! To shave your teeth! You have no idea this was going to happen. You are taken completely off guard. Told we have to shave this and that tooth with no explanations why, whether there are other options to this, whether it’s even necessary. You are simply not worthy of having anything that will be done to you being discussed with you. The one to whom it is being done! It seems they think they know better anyway and you are just an empty vault with teeth to be tinkered on ,like a car at the mechanics. And so on it goes. You might as well be a mannikin instead of a thinking, feeling patient. I’ve never experienced such a thing, even at overwhelmed government hospitals, they will ask ‘how can I help you’ ‘what is giving you problems’. They look you in the eye and talk to you and discuss the treatment options, their pros and cons and other alternatives; you and your practitioner will come to a healthy common understanding and agreement. Not here. How things happen here cannot be right… Since my complaint they have said they will review their new pt policies. I really hope they will do this.

I've had the worst experience with them. My daughter saw them once for a retainer and plate that did not make any difference what so ever. They've charged from my medical aid more than R6000 once off plus R1440 per month for NO services rendered. My medical aid confirmed they've took almost half of what is available already for 1 appointment. When the amout is exhausted bankmed will take ALL my savings as well, so when we get sick there will not be funds available. When i've asked to make an appointment to fit the braces i was told no mam she must come for a check up first in 2 months (by then Hugo's would have taken more instalments for no work done). To me it seems like they are dragging this whole process out just to make money. By the time my daughter eventually goes for braces it will be months later and the medical aid will be exhausted. When you phone to complain, all they say is they will put her on the cancellation list but while you wait we're going to take all the funds available from your medical aid. NOT impressed with your service at all!!!

Just a sausage factory - no personal service and my child has been back 3 times with incorrect fittings. Making an appointment is another nightmare. Find somewhere else where service is better and you are treated as a person not a number.

I have experienced the worst service at Dr Hugo Orthodontist Flora Cliff Branch. Reception disrespectful and laughs at you! It is always all about how much money they can get out of you without any service, you are just another number!
