We went to see Dr L Hochart due to a referral. He performed a colonoscopy on me, which our medical aid paid and we had a co-payment. Then we had to go back to see him after the procedure to get the results of the colonoscopy and he again charged us a consultation fee! I have been with many doctors and also two other specialist in different fields, but never before did any other doctor charge me a consultation fee to give me the results of a test. When my husband asked the doctor about this, he got upset and said that he does not work for free. My husband explained that we do not ask him to work for free, but he got paid to do the procedure and surely giving us the results should form part thereof, it seems dishonest to charge a patient R800,00 simply to tell them your test are clean? He referred me for a CT Scan and again charged us R800,00 just to tell us that the test also came back clean - we did not even spent 5 minutes with him. I support being paid for work done, but there is a line between overcharging and caring for your patients. Disclosing a CT scan report justify a full consultation fee?? I don't think so, maybe you will disagree or maybe you feel as disappointed as I do.
