I requested a quote and got a prompt response from an electrician whose invoice showed Ultimate Tradesman (www.ultimatetradesman.co.za) as the company he worked for. They did hasty work and left without properly checking that all was in order. An issue soon became apparent and after being promised for several days that he will return, he eventually stopped taking my calls. After inspecting the his work myself, I now see that some of the things he said he would need to replace for compliance sake were not replaced at all. I suspect he may have lied about them being faulty in the first place.

As far as I can make out, the person behind this secures the services of "bakkie electricians" who thumb-suck quotes that have no bearing on the actual work involved. In my case, I paid R4000 to an electrician (who seemed a nice guy) on the understanding that I would be getting a certificate of compliance - and that's where it broke down. Over the course of a week, and after exchanging many (increasingly aggressive) phone calls, emails, text and WhatsApp messages, it became clear that I wasn't going to get that certificate. I now have to start all over again, and spend more money. Although I did my usual check on Hellopeter beforehand, his website didn't ring any alarm bells, but when I tried similar-looking websites, all manner of complaints popped up. Useful tip: look out for Google reviews - and if there is no street/office address, be afraid! I found an address, which is useful for serving a summons. I also checked out the domain information, and although the address and owner names are redacted (why hide this?), it shows that the websites electrician.co.za and electricians-online247.co.za are owned by the same person.
