Helen Joseph Hospital
Based on recent customer reviews, Helen Joseph Hospital receives sharply divided feedback. Patients and families consistently praise certain doctors, neuro and surgical teams, and ward staff for delivering compassionate, attentive care that some describe as comparable to private hospitals. However, a recurring theme involves distressing encounters with specific nurses, perceived rudeness, dismissive attitudes, and slow response during emergencies. Communication breakdowns around treatment plans and family updates are frequently mentioned, alongside concerns about resource constraints. The facility itself is often described as run down but generally clean.

I would like to formally lodge a complaint regarding the conduct and unprofessional communication of a healthcare worker registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA). I recently received the following message from this individual: "Ohh and you did well by losing that baby of yours, I hope you keep losing them." I find this statement deeply disturbing, emotionally abusive, and entirely inconsistent with the ethical standards, compassion, and professionalism expected of a healthcare professional. The message references pregnancy loss in a cruel and malicious manner, causing significant emotional distress. The healthcare worker involved is Dr. Nonkululeko Shezi, who is registered/practising as an Occupational The****** at a Helen Joseph hospital. I have further communication as evidence in support of this complaint. As healthcare practitioners are entrusted with caring for and supporting vulnerable individuals, I believe this behaviour raises serious concerns regarding professional conduct, ethics, and fitness to practice.

To: Human Resources Department Helen Joseph Hospital Subject: Formal Complaint Regarding Unfair Queue Management at Orthopedic Clinic Dear Sir/Madam, My name is Xhalisile Fakade Siduko, and I am writing to formally report an incident that took place at the Orthopedic Clinic involving unfair patient queue management and unprofessional treatment. I arrived at the clinic at approximately 05:30 in the morning to secure my place in the queue for medical assistance. I was given number 19. However, I later discovered that another patient had obtained number 18B allegedly through arrangements made with administration staff, despite arriving after me. When I raised concern about this situation, I was threatened that I would not be assisted if I continued to question the matter. I found this treatment unfair, intimidating, and deeply upsetting as a patient who had followed the proper process and arrived early. I would like this matter to be investigated thoroughly, particularly: - The issuing of queue numbers outside the normal process; - The conduct of the staff involved; - The threats made towards me when I questioned the situation. I specifically wish to report the matter involving Dr Dlamini and the administration process at the Orthopedic Clinic. I kindly request that my complaint be formally recorded and that my queue number be properly recognized in the patient system. I trust the hospital will take this complaint seriously and ensure fair treatment for all patients. Yours faithfully, Xhalisile Fakade Siduko Patient at Orthopedic Clinic Helen Joseph Hospital

The Nurses and Doctors are amazing people, they are brilliant at what they do. It's very hectic when you have go to the emergency rooms, but the staff or effect and effective at what they do, there is a slight delay because it's very busy, But the wards the nurses and doctors in ward 16 and ward 17 are amazing they do their best with what they have to work with, the Intern and Surgeons keep me will informed at all times, the care that they gave me was even better than at a private hospital. The wards are a little run down but spotless,

I had a seizure just today as am writing with a broken heart,, I don't know how long was I out, I must have vomited, the nurse that came to check our vits before the seizure, I told her that I'm not feeling well, she told me that my vitals were good. The doctor during the day told me to lay on my back whenever I feel somehow because that's when they usually attack, mind you I never had seizures before, they occurred after an incident that told place here at the hospital where one of their staff left me while I was on single stroke and I fell on my back with her being neglected that's how this seizure started. The nurse Magwaza after noticing that I had seizure and it was bad she left me, I woke up after few minutes lying on my vomiting I stayed there not knowing what to, luckily there was tissue next to I used it to clean myself and the bed when it was a mess and **** facing the other way round waiting for them that maybe they will help me. Afterwards she comes and tellme not to lie in that way am ruining the drip and I asked her did you not see that I had a seizure and vomited and you left me just like that, she said she was aware but she was busy, so I asked if I did not wake was I gonna be there on my vomit this whole time, she gave me an attitude and continued to do what she was doing, I then asked water so that I can clean, when she comes she asks where is the vomit in the blanket wherelse she saw me cleaning. That just broke me that there's some people who work for the dake of money not passion, she did not even apologize but try to brush it off by offering me blankets, I felt disrespected and not see because I'm young.

Government hospitals often get bad reviews......... That is not the case with the Helen Joseph Hospital. I was there visiting at least 6 times in the last month. All the staff are super-friendly, from the security guards at the entrance and the booms, to the nurses, sisters and doctors. The family member that was admitted was treated very well and had only good things to say about everyone. Yes, the building looks a bit run down but they were in the process of painting. Keep up the good work. And thank you to the entire team.

Good day I’m deeply concerned about the doctor’s decision to remove my mother from the ventilator and give it to another patient if needed. This puts her life in serious danger as she’s still fighting and deserves a fair chance to recover. I fully understand the challenges the hospital faces with limited resources. Regardless of her condition, we believe she deserves full medical support and compassion during this critical time. Please, I’m pleading that her ventilator not be removed. Every moment on it gives her hope and a chance to live. Kind regards,
