Upon admission, you cellphone will be taken from you and you will only get access to it thrice a week for 30 minutes. No contact with your family allowed outside of this. If you do manage to convince the social worker to allow you to call home, this is done in her office under her supervision. As a woman and a victim of ***ual assault, you can expect to share meals, communal spaces and classes with convicted ********s or those awaiting trial for violent crimes. I experienced a number of instances where inappropriate and lewd comments were made about my body. I never once felt safe and even under these circumstances, I was not allowed to reach my family. The food is terrible - the website is a complete lie. On my first night, I was given a slice of dry brown bread and water for dinner. Breakfast is usually a porridge, a slice of bread, cheap juice or tepid tea made and sweetened in bulk. No outside food is allowed and diabetic meals were not provided. With boiled cabbage, phuthu, Maas, sugar beans, boiled eggs, tinned or frozen veg exclusively. Meat is consumed once a day and the quality thereof is questionable at best. I have many more horrible experiences to share, especially the main Doctor's massive ego, hurling verbally abusive insulrs at patients to the point of them crying. Many walked in not knowing what to expect (a closely guarded secret for a reason, but walked out with unforgettable trauma. If their whole angle is "tough love", they are getting it wrong. It is not much more than a glorified prison.
