Hi, I would like to share a few unfortunate encounters with staff at La Bakery in Ormonde, during the course of the past few months i.e. May to July 2018. The first being a number of encounters with a female cashier of African ethnicity by the name of 'Dip...something' who appears to take note of every customer, how often they visit and what they purchase. This cashier then proceeds to go out of her way to make you feel terribly inadequate, by means of eye contact and body language if she believes you have visited too frequently or purchased too much. __________________________________________________________________________________ Another encounter was on the morning of July 2nd when I had popped in to the bakery at around 8:52 am. I was received by a tall, old man with a white beard who in a very hostile and dismissive manner advised that they open at 9:00am. I explained that I am preparing for an office function, am running late and if they could please make a concession and to which he responded that there was no cashier to serve. I obligingly waited another ten minutes. As soon as it turned 9:00am, I looked through the glass door and could see that the cashier had arrived and was all set up and ready to serve. The old man and cashier (a different cashier to the one mentioned above) were engaged in a relaxed conversation. I knocked at the door and the old man darted me a look and refused to open. The cashier however, appeared uncomfortable with the old man's behavior and proceeded to open the door. She advised that there were still two or three minutes left on their clock and so I was kept waiting outside in the cold even though they were ready to serve and doing absolutely nothing. The lady cashier appeared sincere to assist but may have been afraid to override the grouchy old man's instructions. By this time there were a few more customers who were kept waiting and who were now also complaining of the attitude of the staff. Very reluctantly, the doors were then opened some minutes later and by which time we were made to feel like we were a terrible imposition. ________________________________________________________________ To be fair, La bakery does have the best products in the South of Johannesburg, however this speaks to the efforts of the staff who work in the kitchen. Equal attention needs to be placed on appropriately training staff who interact with clients such as managers and cashiers.
