Their services is so pathetic and annoying however the reason why we go to hospital is to see help ASAP but yiu find the sticker on the walls says waiting time will not be more than 45 minutes to get help but you ended up staying 5to6 hours not being attended. And they too ******, they attend those who speak English 1st then once they are done its where they start assisting other people.

Very disappointed with their services towards my daughter who has an NGT tube. Being sent from pillar to post just so that she can get a new NGT inserted.

Hello Sakhiseni Please see attached details as per our telephone conversation Thanks and Regards Cynthia Cell 0846784431 Sent from my Huawei phone -------- Original message -------- From: Cynthia Williams <cynthiaceciliaw@gmail.com> Date: Thu, 25 Nov 2021, 12:48 PM To: jyothi.laldas@media24.com Subject: Neglect of elderly patients (my mum) at Grey's and Northdale hospitals Hello Jyothi As per our telephonic and whatsapp conversation we decided to send all correspondence via email. I would like you just to have a little background on why we were not happy going to hospital with my mum. 2 years ago my mum (Mrs Joan Collop) fell and broke her hip. I went to a private doctor who referred her to Grey's hospital but apparently she had to go to Northdale first to follow protocol. She was transferred to Grey's for the op but due to her pressure and blood thinning tablets she had to wait a couple of days before the op. She was then transferred back to Northdale before the op at 3.00am in the morning. To cut a long story short she eventually had the op at Northdale and instead of being there for 3 days she landed up there for 3 weeks almost on her death bed. They pumped her with Tramadol and morphine tablets and had to eventually resuscitate her due to a huge seizure that she had. She landed up in high care for 3 days totally confused and hallucinating. I requested if I could take her home on the Monday and they eventually agreed and my mum healed in no time at home. On the 30th of October my mum seemed fine in the morning and even did her special vote with the IEC at home. About 1.00pm she felt dizzy and we helped her to her room. She flopped on the bed and started with a ****led speech. I was very concerned and helped to prop her up on pillows to make her comfortable. I was still not happy to take her to hospital. On Sunday morning I tried calling a few doctors to do a house call and none were prepared to come out and help. A very kndhearted dedicated nurse came to my home to give me some advice and to check my mum and told me to rather take her to hospital. I applaud her ❤️ My daughter phoned Daymed who said they could help and it would be best to bring her in. They gave me their outsourced ambulance number who we called to come and pick her up. On arrival to the hospital it was so disappointing as we stood awhile at reception before getting any help. First of all I had to pay for the consultation before even seeing a doctor!!!! I could not believe the service who pays before they see a doctor!! They finally transferred her from the ambulance trolley to the hospital bed. The doctor was a foreigner but never listened to a word I told him about the problem with my mum. He proceeded to treat her for asthma and not what the problem was. I asked for a MRI to be done and he told me she has to be admitted into hospital and they do not take on patients who are paying cash only medical aid patients!!!! I was so angry I went to the front desk and spoke to the guy who first asked us to come in. He said he is not a medical person and only works in the office so I asked him why did he give medical advise in the first place. I asked how much to book in and do the MRI he said R25000. 00. How can people be ********** when all you want to know is what is wrong with your loved one at a time of crisis. These private hospitals is just a money making game. The doctor very rudely gave a letter referring my mum to Northdale when I distinctly asked him for Grey's but he was angry with me for asking him why is he treating her for asthma nibulizing her and giving her an injection instead of looking to see what the problem is. So he refused to change the letter but told me that he did.!!! I arrived at Grey's about 3.45pm and the sister in charge of casualty was so rude and told me that I am not allowed to come there as I should have gone to Northdale. I explained that my mum has been having some treatment for her hip op and was a patient at Grey's. She then called the doctor who told me off as well as the ambulance driver. He said we are not following protocol and we have to go to Northdale. I told him all I want is for him to tell me what is wrong with my 88year old mother instead of making us ride all over the country side to find help in the medical field. Eventually they agreed and transferred her from the ambulance trolley onto the casualty bed. The doctor listened to what happened to my mum then started with all his tests and blood tests and put a drip on her. I waited with my mum whilst all the procedures were taking place. Then the doctor said they needed to do a CT scan to see if she had a stroke or if there are any other complications. We then took her for the scan where there is only one person on duty so you as the family members and orderly has to help to lift the patient onto the table to get the scan then I had to stay and hold her hands down and keep her very still so that the CT could be done. I had to wear the lead apron to protect myself from the radiation. We had to wait awhile for the results to come down so the doctor told me that the neurologist will be coming to have a chat with me after viewing the results. The neurologist came in to see me about 9.00pm to find out about my mums history which I explained to him as well as all her previous records I had with me of her previous scans and xrays. He then explained to me that they are still going through all the results and will come back to me once finalised. At about 11.00pm the neurologist came back to me to explain to me after viewing the scans and blood tests they picked up that my mum had a urine infection, she was severely dehydrated, and anemic that has caused her to be like this but also her kidneys have been damaged and her liver slightly damaged. The ecg that was done came out clear. The xrays picked up that there was no chest infection. They also need to run a few more tests to iron out a few problems as they need to treat one thing at a time to heal my mum. He has to speak to his superiors as well as the internal meds doctor with her superior to decide the action plan going forward but they will update me as they go along. He mentioned that the scan picked up that she had 2 strokes but it did not happen on Saturday it could of been a couple of weeks or more. He also said that he was not sure if my mum would be admitted as they also need to find a safe environment for her as Grey's hospital is the hub for highly infectious Covid patients and they would not like to compromise her immune system 🙄🙄. I asked if I could take her home and bring her in for whatever necessary treatment she needed and he said no it was the best place for her to be in was hospital. He also had to have the internal meds doctor to go through her records and they were going to do xrays. The internal meds doctor came through to find out the history of my mum as well so I had to tell the whole story again. The 3 doctors then had a discussion together then the meds doctor came back and told me that she is looking for a safe environment to place my mum in. My heart just dropped as I knew that she is sending her to Northdale, I asked her if she could admit her to Edendale and she said no that Northdale has a bed for her and she has already passed all the history to the doctor at Northdale and they do have a bed for her. I could not believe after they told me they were running more tests and they would tackle the problems one at a time for her recovery... They were now so eager to sign her off and get her out of their hospital. They could not wait to write up all their paperwork and sign her out of the hospital to go and sit in their cozy nest. There must of been approximately 3 patients in the casualty. They were not busy at all. The next thing I knew their was a doc I think inserting a catheter on her which could have been done at 4.00pm when we arrived. The there was another person doing a Covid test on her just to prep her to move out of their hospital. So callous with no compassion or empathy. The 4 nursing staff were all sitting together looking at their cell phones and the one was dozing off to sleep. Where is the love and care that nurses showed in the past they studied becasue they had a calling today they study for their next paycheck. Thats all it is a job no compassion and empathy for a patient. Where is the oath that doctors and nurses profess to uphold in choosing this career. I am not labeling all nurses and doctors in the same category as we do have some very dedicated ones. We had to wait about 2 hours for the ambulance to arrive so we were transferred at 2.30am in the morning to Northdale hospital. Now who sends an 88 year old patient whose immune system is compromised to be transferred that cold hour of the morning to another hospital without having a bed to go to in the ward they supposed to have booked. I asked the ambulance staff if they had a blanket to cover my mum they said No (unconcerned) but it is only a short distance to go they said. Eventually the staff at Greys gave us a blanket to cover her. When we arrived at Northdale I had to go and get my mums chart and the ambulance guys transported her in to the Covid tent into one of the cubicles. If my mum was so comprised and needed safety who takes a person without Covid and leaves them to stay in a Covid environment awaiting availability of a bed in R ward which we were told was available at that time by the Grey's hospital doctor. I then had to go through casualty to get her chart but had to walk through all these patients who were all sleeping next to each other and others sleeping on the floor on makeshift beds. No Covid protocols in place. What a sad situation to think people who are so ill but have to sleep on chairs and floor to wait to be seen by a doctor it is a real sin to be poor and have to persevere such torture my heart broke for all these patients. My heart also breaks for the staff of Northdale as they are so overworked while Grey's casualty nurses can sit on their cellphone and enjoy their evening of night shift with no patients to see to.!!!! I then had to speak to the 4 th doctor at Northdale on the same night to explain the story all over again to him. How come the files are not transferred if the patient is transferred? Why does everything have to start all over again. At 4.00am I finally completed handing over the history of my mum illness and ran twice to get her files and back again for an admission chart. They told me that my mum would only have to stay in hospital about 3 says to clear the urine infection and to clear her chest which seemed like it was clear by the time she came to Northdale. In the meantime she stayed on that oxygen mask from 4. 00pm why??? The doc told me she would be transferred later to R ward. In the morning 01.11.21 I called R ward but she was not there so I called the Covid tent and the nurse said she was still there as they were waiting for a bed. I enquired how she was doing and she said my mum was fine. I asked if we could come for visiting hours at 3.00pm and she said yes. My 2 daughters went through to visit at 3.00pm and was told they must wait on the side chairs as they are busy and the doctor will come and see them. They both were very worried and thought there must be something wrong cause the curtains were drawn in the cubicle. After about 15 min the doctor takes them both to an office and tells them my mum is demised at about 2.30pm as she could not expel the toxins in her body and they came up and fluid filled her lungs which she breathed in.. What a shock it was for my daughters to hear such devastating news. I rushed to the hospital and went straight to my mums bed and she looked like she was sleeping so I asked the doctor if he is sure she had passed on as her body was very warm. He said it was very hot in the tent and that's why her body was so warm. I asked for water and a paper towel to wipe her mouth as her mouth was so dry with a crust around it. The nurse said it was the oxygen mask that did that to her. I was so angry and hurt and keep wondering till today if my mum died thirsty. I was the one wiping her mouth and feeding her with water during the whole night and I leave her for a couple of hours and I come back to see her mouth so dry at the time of her death. I often wonder what did they do for her for those few hours or were they too busy helping the younger generation as nobody cares about the elderly. Our country has become so cold hearted towards our elderly and yet these are the people that built this country they leave them as if they are animals to lay like dogs to die once they over a certain age 😭. I then enquired from the doctor how did fluid fill her lungs when she had no water on the lungs he apologized and said he made a mistake when he explained but it was the sputum that she could not cough up that caused her to choke on it and unable to breath. My daughters and I were asked to wait outside because we in a highly infectious area and we may become infected. I could not believe what I was hearing they bring my mum into a highly infectious area to stay there when the doctor at Grey's says she is sending her to a safe environment.!!!! The next day I had to go back and identify my mums body and I had to go and get the covid certificate from the doctors becasue you have to have it to bury your people. I went back to casualty and when they checked her file there was no certificate in it. The doctor had to pH the covid centre to get the certificate which eventually came through a half an hour later. The first one was sent at 9. 00am which nobody bothered to enter into her file so who was actually waiting for the results??? That was the second result received. The nurses that were there when my mum was admitted were on duty on Tuesday when I went for the certificate they were shocked that my mum passed away as they said she was not so sick at all!!!! I explained to them how upset I was and what took place at Grey's and how much place they had at their hospital yet they dumped my mum here at Northdale where there is such chaos. I told them I will not let this go I am going to the media with my story. They then called the superior nurse to see what happened to my mum. Whilst the compassionate sister in charge was checking my mums file a female doctor with long false eyelashes came to attack the sister and told her she had no right to look at the records without a doctor present WHY? ??? The doctor then came to me to explain to me that my mum kidneys were in a bad condition and that Greys sent her here because they don't to dialysis for patients over 65.... Can you believe it... So I asked her do they just leave them to die? I explain to her that the doctors at Grey's did not give that report about her kidneys and that she needed dialysis. I still have his full report on me so is she covering for herself or other doctors as she never saw my mum at all so who gives her the right to give me a diagnosis? I told her I will take this further by that time I was so upset, emotional and hurt that I walked away. The death certificate states that my mum died of natural causes. The paperwork that was filled if say she died of 1. Respiratory failure 2. Aspiration 3. Cardiovascular accident. What a joke so many diagnosis so who is telling the truth and how do you get so many different stories from all different medical staff? I am telling my story and hopefully you will put it on the front page as I would like to help every elderly and poor person out there that is going through such traumatic times with Grey's and Northdale hospital and hopefully it will make a difference for saving other elderly peoples lives. Why are doctors allowed to study in Cuba, India etc. when they cannot get in our universities? Not everyone is meant to be a doctor or nurse. It's a calling if you don't have the care love and compassion then you in the wrong profession Why is there only intern doctors in all hospitals? Where are the doctors overseeing the interns? Why do we have so many foreigner doctors? Where is the sworn oaths of all medical professionals? Do the government medical employees know that through these patients coming to their hospitals is the reason they have a job? Why do they treat the patients so badly? Patients that cannot get out of bed their food is left at the end of the bed on a trolley if they cannot reach too bad they don't eat. If they cannot go to the shower a basin of water is left at the end of the bed if they cannot reach it nothing gets done. You find more of the patients helping each other for survival Why is there no linen in the hospitals the ones they have are big holes in the sheets. The blankets are the ones we give our animals to sleep on??? Grey's hospital does not have napkins for their patients they leave a bed sheet to use the loo if you cannot get off your bed who can be succumbed to this type of treatment? Where is our country going to? At least people in overseas countries die with dignity not here in SA when you go to hospital you going to a slaughter house 💔💔💔💔 Thanks & Regards Cynthia Williams I wrote this email numerous times to the Witness and up until now this has not been published so I am trying to see if I can get answers with Hello Peter 💔 I would like this letter to also go to Grey's Hospital and Daymed hospital
