Intercape puts itself forward as a Christian business. I have been on many trips with Intercape where Christian shows have been shown non stop on the bus. I have been satisfied enough with the Intercape service - in my experience it has been reliable and clean. But recently I had an experience that left a bad taste in my mouth. On a trip a young girl sat next to me. It was clear that she was living on a breath and a hair - having taken out a loan on her SASSA account to come and meet a DJ who had invited her to stay with him and promised to teach her how to DJ - which was her dream. She was telling me about all of this between moments of myself and herself drifting away - as one does on a bus. I happened to have my eyes on her phone while she was exchanging text messages with this DJ guy that was supposed to pick her up where I saw him tell her not to come anymore as his parents would not let her stay! She had just banked everything on this! And was going to arrive in Vanrhynsdorp in the middle of the night now with nowhere to go! She was in a state and we were discussing what she should do. She had only R400 to her name and her family were estranged. She would be on the streets. The bus we were on happened to have the final destination of Pretoria. This is where she was originally from. I suggested she should stay on the bus till then. At the next stop I asked the driver - I said my ticket was to Upington, what should happen if I wanted to carry on all the way to Pretoria. (I ask as though it was me as the girl was too scared that he would tell her it was not possible and would need to get off). The busdriver told me that I could just stay and pay the difference in price when I got to Pretoria. So I went back to her and told her she could do this. I looked up the price of a ticket to Pretoria. It was R300 more than what she had paid so I did and e-wallet of R300 into her account so she would have money to pay the difference. When we got to the stop she wanted to get off at the bus driver was calling and calling her name for her to get off. She was terrified. So I got up and told him that she was going to stay till Pretoria and would pay the difference in the ticket price when she got there. But he said that he had told me this and this did not necessarily apply to her - that he needed to speak to her. I called her. She was terrified and not very good at explaining herself so I insisted I stay whilst she talk to the busdriver though he kept on insisting that I go. He kept on saying that she must get off. We said it was the middle of the night, she had been dropped and she would be on the street. This was a heated encounter that took quite a while and everyone in the bus had to wait for us. Eventually he phone his head office and they said she could pay for an extension to Pretoria - of R900!!! That this was the only option. She only had R400 and now needed R900 otherwise she would have to get off. So rather than her being on the street I had to go and draw R550 to give her and she put in the R400 - the last of her money (her loan on her Sassa grant). I gave her the extra 50 so she would have something when she arrived. So - to ensure that a young girl would not end up on the street in the middle of the night far from her home town I ended up spending R850. And Intercape made R600 more than they would have made if she had bought a straight ticket to Pretoria - whereas it actually cost them nothing to have her for the extra bit of the trip as the bus had plenty of space. So here is my point. Intercape propogates Christian values. But what happens when it comes to the crunch in real life. They would rather let a total stranger pick up the pieces when it came to helping a young girl - whereas it would have cost them nothing. I did sent an email to Intercape on my return. I explained the story to them. I would have liked to have a bit of a refund on the money I gave to her. Instead all I got from them was constant justification on their position - that they would not have put her out on the street - that they would have driven her to the closest police station. That would not have been a helpful outcome - even if they had proposed it. I suggested what I thought of as fair. The guy on the phone did not budge from his position. I asked to speak to his superior. He said they would get back to me. Intercape never did.
I ordered products from them which arrived and were fine - no complaint there. BUT, I have been trying to get hold of these guys for ages to get more info and specs on one of their products that I purchased as want to formulate with it. Its impossible. They don't answer emails or their watsapp no. I would not call it professional. And the fact that I only see 5-star reviews on their website makes it very suspicious. Why leave contact numbers if you are not going to answer them
