In the first week of Jan (after the holiday rush) we decided to pop down to the Salt Rock Hotel with our son to catch the sunset on the beach at the tidal pools and end off with an early supper at the hotel. On arrival at the gates we were turned away by the security stating that the restaurant was closed and that we could not enter the hotel. Sadly, our evening plans were dulled by this and we turned around with a very disappointed little man who so desperately wanted to go down to the beach with us and then enjoy something to eat before going home. I called the hotel to ask if something had changed as we have regularly gone to the hotel numerous times before with our family, to do exactly this, and have never had a problem. The lady who answered was extremely short and inattentive. After enquiring whether we could try again the following Friday, I was quickly dismissed and had the phone put down on me. In the past during holidays, we used to be able to enter the hotel, pay a R200 deposit and go down to the beach, then use the R200 (and some) towards a meal and drinks at the hotel afterwards. This seems to be no more. This afternoon 19 Jan, we were turned away again by security on arrival. The plan was to take our son to the tidal pool and have a bite to eat before coming home. @saltrockhotel this is very disappointing especially as we locals have regularly supported you throughout the years. Your parking lot speaks volumes of how "busy" you are, (both times now, it was very empty). Perhaps you CAN afford to only have visitors from out of town. Business must have been booming in December. As loyal patrons and residents, our family has camped at the caravan park a few times. We have had many Sunday roasts and midweek breakfasts, but I am afraid that today was the last time we will come to support the hotel and enjoy it's facilities and restaurant. I am sure that we are not the only locals who have experienced this recently, something has changed, and this experience has left a bitter taste in our mouths as we have had such lovely times there. I have read quite a few reviews from the last year, it seems things are on the downward trend there sadly. Perhaps a change of attitude and listening to the feedback given regarding your service etc will help you keep this landmark of the North Coast alive. Very sad to see other people have also not had great experiences recently. Please read your Google reviews as well.

We booked a 10 day stay in the caravan park expecting peace and quiet. The 1st 5 days were wonderful. On the 5th night the hotel hosted a conference and the noise of music was incredibly loud, drowning out the sound of the sea and completely spoiling the peace and quiet. At no point during the booking process were we made aware of the fact that there was going to be extreme noise levels. A notice was handed to us the day before the start of the conference warning us about the noise and apologising for any inconvenience caused. We spoke to one of the male managers on duty whe really didn't care - shortly after speaking to him, the music volume went up. Apparently the hotels desire to make money is more important than providing guests with peace and quiet. If you want a stress free, quiet holiday, the Salt Rock Hotel is not a hotel to go to.

I've been coming to camp at Salt Rock Caravan Park since 2012. When I met my wife in 2017 it became our spontaneous escape destination of choice. We love the lifestyle. The chats with neighboring sites about refurbishments to their caravans, tips and tricks, 4x4 repair hacks & off the beaten path adventures. It's always brought us such joy. This weekend was, to my absolute astonishment, nothing like that. Right from our arrival, the management staff were rude at best. We arrived 3 hrs before our check in schedule and the lady at the front desk opened up with a lecture about arrival times. Taken aback by this I immediately apologized and said I was happy to pay additional money if need be and that we had just made good time in getting there. She begrudgingly let us in early after it became clear that there was no one on our site (or any site in our immediate vicinity for that matter). Saturday was my 39th birthday and at around 9am we had a friend of mine arrive with his 4yr old son and join us for breakfast after paying the day visitors fee. An hour later our 2nd day visitors arrived (bear in mind we had collectively booked 4 sites with a 5th site being taken that day, no site had more than 3 people on it (6 is the max allowed per site) and between all sites combined there was at this stage 1 day visitor and a child). It was at this point that things went from a little uncomfortable with the management to absolutely absurd. A friend called me saying that management was denying him, his wife and 2 daughters (aged 4 and 6) entry at the reception desk. Not understanding what the problem was, I went up to the office to see if I could clear things up. Once there I was told that we would not be allowed any visitors as this constituted breaking the rules as we were having a party and that I had basically tried to dupe them into throwing some kind of giant event that was so clearly against the rules. It's worth clarifying that there was no music playing, or drinking taking place at this time and at no stage during the entire weekend was there a single complaint from any of the other sites about us. We'd intentionally chosen a site far away from neighbors as we know that the occasional kid crying can be a disturbance and worked hard to ensure that we treated the grounds with the same respect we had for years gone by. However, management claimed that because all 4 sites were now congregating on my site under 1 gazebo it was now a ‘party’. The whole affair was handled awfully with little attempt to see reason by the management who then spent a good part of the remainder of the day blatantly staring down at our site from the office window as if waiting for us to step out of line. Who knows what they were looking for but it felt oppressive and belittling. We were treated like a bunch of drunk college kids who were hell bent on getting up to no good as opposed to young families dealing with entertaining toddlers and an almost constant north easterly wind (which if you've ever camped at salt rock you know is no fun on the forward plots) . I'm not one to write bad reviews. But I also think people should know what they're getting into. And with the new management at Salt rock Caravan Park what you're getting into is being spoken to like a child, berated for things they ‘think’ you might do and having your day ruined because they cannot tell the difference between a group of late 30 somethings and their babies enjoying a day at the beach at 9.30 in the morning and a college house party. I'm bitterly disappointed at how the whole situation was handled by the management, the lady at reception in particular. And after so many years and cherished memories at that caravan park, I think it'll take a lot to get me to ever go back again. Clearly if you aren't a retired caravan owner in your late 60s you are no longer the target market for this still beautiful but terribly managed property.

Salt Rock Hotel was recommended by the apartment owner where we were holidaying. Four of us went there for dinner on Saturday 30th of October. I ordered a medium-rare steak. I was served with a well-done steak. The waiter took my meal back to the kitchen and brought back the same steak, saying that they could not change it as he had made a mistake. I refused to accept the meal and asked to see the manager. The waiter took the meal and, 20 minutes later arrived with a medium-rare steak. The manager was nowhere to be seen. I ate my meal alone as the rest of our group had finished eating. Service was terrible and not even an acknowledgement that they messed up!

We booked for 2 weeks over Xmas and new year. Found the rooms average (lots of broken and old appliances). Wifi not great. The food was good (healthy-ish options available). Staff was the bright star here. Good service and was looked after. Big problem was KIDS over running hotel. Was chaos as no dedicated place for them. The fact that these kids would run around corridors, knock on your door and run away, shout like they being ******ed, slam doors. Not acceptable that this was allowed as we spent over R100k.
