I took my Land cruiser VX80 automatic to Springfield gearbox in March 2025 to see if they could smooth out a small gear hunting issue. They sat with the vehicle for two weeks. After I phoned they said they could not fix the issue in that they did not have the necessary equipment to do it. I accepted that and collected the vehicle. Immediately I noticed that the Rev counter was not working ( They agreed it was working when I took it to them). After intimating that the failure could "happen at any time" they agreed to take the vehicle back to see to the issue. Long story short - after another four weeks of the vehicle mainly sitting outside I was informed they couldn't fix it. They have now turned their back on me with no apologies or willing to compensate me in any way. Needless to say I have a vehicle with a gear hunting issue and a Rev counter still not working. I have had no communication with them since the end of December 2025. The issue is still not resolved and it will cost me plenty to have this electrical issue seen to. I could go on and on about the pathetic service I have received . If you have an automatic gearbox issue avoid this place like the plague.

I’ve had the absolute misfortune of dealing with Springfield Gearbox and Differential, and I can confidently say it’s been nothing short of a R38,000 nightmare. For the past six months, they’ve failed to fix my gearbox. Six months—and the vehicle has sat in their workshop for nearly half that time, collecting dust while I’ve made six pointless trips back and forth. Now, after all this time, they’ve come back to tell me that 4th and 5th gear are burnt out due to incorrect pressure settings—damage that wasn’t even there when I brought the car in last October. In other words, they’ve made things worse, not better. The gearbox is in worse shape now than it was when I first trusted them with it. They sell themselves with glowing reviews, but dig a little deeper and the horror stories begin to pile up—some customers went back there 16 times. I should have known better. Their operation is chaotic at best, *********** at worst. They can’t keep to their own timelines, they haven’t fixed anything they originally promised, and when pressed, they point fingers at suppliers, equipment, and even their own ex-employees. Yes—they even fired a mechanic, supposedly because of the massive number of returns. That should tell you something. To make matters worse, I’ve now had to request a full refund for their so-called “work,” which included stripped belly pan bolts, and replacing a completely useless battery they threw into my dual battery system. Turns out it was a small car battery with dead cells—utterly reckless and unprofessional. This place is not just unreliable, it's downright dangerous to your vehicle and your wallet. Avoid them at all costs. I wouldn’t wish this experience on anyone.

It’s been just over a year since I got my car back from Springfield Gearbox after their so-called “repairs,” and I feel it's important to share my experience for anyone considering their services. Background: I have hands-on experience with various mechanical repairs, including servicing, brake work, turbo replacements, and cooling systems. However, when it came to automatic gearbox repairs, I needed professional expertise. After researching three repair shops that offered similar pricing, I chose Springfield Gearbox because it was the most conveniently located and had generally decent reviews. Repair Process: Location: The workshop itself is indoors, but customer cars are parked outside without cover. This leads to delays when it rains. Repair Period: Initially quoted a 2-3 week repair timeframe (consistent with other shops), I dropped off my car on August 17, 2023, and only got it back on December 19, 2023 — a frustrating 4-month ordeal. Trial-and-Error Approach: The repair process seemed chaotic, with the gearbox being installed and removed multiple times as they struggled to pinpoint the issue. The problem was initially diagnosed as an oil pump failure which broken as i viewed it, then a torque converter issue, and later a solenoid valve problem. Post-Repair Issues: Upon receiving the car, I immediately noticed the steering felt “floating” that made the car unsafe. I asked them to inspect the steering rack and bolts, as I suspected this was the cause. I returned the next day to find the issue unresolved. Seeking a second opinion at a tire and steering garage revealed: -Loose steering rack bolts, with one stripped -A loose engine mount -A leaking seal -A non-functional 4x4 lock (which still remains faulty) -Used, black gearbox oil instead of fresh OEM-spec oil Ongoing Problems: A few months after the "repair," the gearbox developed a persistent shudder. Diagnostics at Springfield revealed ECU faults, which were canceled but returned later. The shudder continues to this day, forcing me to replace gearbox oil every 10,000 km instead of the standard 40,000 km to reduce it temporarily. Conclusion, based on my experience: Manual Gearbox Repairs: Springfield Gearbox might be suitable. Automatic Gearbox Repairs: Not recommended. The lack of expertise in handling complex electronic components was evident throughout my ordeal. Would I recommend them? Not based on my experience.

Took gearbox to get my reverse gear repaired Dec 16th, was told it will be stripped and quoted the next day. Waited a week - no quote. Called in then got told they closed for festive and reopen the 5th of Jan. Messaged the owner early on Jan 5th saying I’m collecting my box and he says okay. I go collect my box and it’s given back to me in pieces? So I wait 3 weeks, get no updates and get my box back in pieces, which was working fine (besides reverse). Beware of this place. Took in a working gearbox and I got it back in pieces. No explanation they just bring it out and throw it in my boot. They obviously wanted to spite me for saying I’m fetching my box, this after letting me wait 3 and a half weeks with no feedback whatsoever. Anyways they just lost an opportunity to work on my entire fleet of cars and my teams drift cars lol. Take your hard earned money to people who will respect you and your vehicle/parts.

I had an incredible experience with Springfield Gearbox when they recently assisted me with my car’s gearbox. Not only did they resolve the issue on the same day, but the team also proved to be the best at what they do. The staff was friendly, professional, and kept me updated throughout the entire process, which gave me peace of mind knowing everything was handled behind the scenes. What impressed me the most was their hard work and dedication to getting the job done right without it costing me an arm or a leg! Their service is honest and reliable, and I could see the sacrifices they make to ensure customer satisfaction. I highly recommend Springfield Gearbox to anyone needing quality, efficient service. You can trust them completely! Thank you, Springfield Gearbox, for your excellent work!
