I engaged the highveld branch of Auto Investments on Thursday 15 December about a land cruiser GR-X I had interest in. I have known some of the the staff there for a number of years so assumed I was in good hands. I agreed a purchase price and trade in of my BMW and provided the required docs for a financing application on Thursday itself. Cecil at the dealership who was arranging my finance was professional and specified what he required and soon after supplying it he confirmed a finance deal for my consideration. I had also engaged Michael the "owner" and Tinus a salesman during the purchase process. On Friday morning of 16th I sent a whatsapp to Cecil informing him that I was going away for the weekend and would consider a decision and pop in to the dealership on Monday morning for a final decision, to which he responded "no problem, enjoy the weekend." I thus assumed I had the time to consider whether to spend R1.45million on this car. On the Monday morning of 19 December I visit the dealership and meet Tinus and inform him that I would like to look at the service history on the car and also to confirm there is no prior accident damage to the vehicle. At this point Tinus tells me that the car was sold to a cash customer over the weekend, but says don't worry I can get you another one with less mileage and same spec. Disappointed I wait for him to enquire about the alternate vehicle just to be told that it is also sold. And that is that......living up to the reputation of motor dealerships was the harsh reality I was exposed to today. I would have thought it would have been standard practice to contact a pending customer and inform him of another buyer and stating to me that although I had first option I had to make a decision sooner than expected so that they knew what to do with the other buyer. Would you think that would be a reasonable course of action? Maybe I'm just old fashioned hey. Who to trust in this world, what happened to good old integrity?
