Digital-Only Textbooks – No Practical Support for Students
I want to share my experience with Boston City Campus so that other students can make an informed decision before enrolling. I have raised multiple concerns about being required to use only electronic textbooks, with no option for physical copies. I explained clearly that I struggle to study from a screen due to eye strain and limited access to suitable devices. Despite this, I was repeatedly offered “support sessions” on how to use the platform, which does not address my actual problem. I did try to adapt by printing the one module that was available in PDF, and it made a big difference in my ability to study. However, no similar alternatives were provided for my other subjects. I want to be clear that my concern is not about refusing to use technology, but about having realistic access to study material in a way that allows me to succeed academically. Unfortunately, I do not feel that my situation has been properly considered. This experience has had a negative impact on my studies and exam preparation. I will be completing this semester, but I have decided that I will not continue my studies with Boston City Campus. I hope that by sharing this, other students will carefully consider whether this learning approach will work for them before enrolling. I believe students should have more flexibility when it comes to accessing their learning materials, especially when it directly affects their ability to study effectively.

06 May 2026, 08:04 Hi Debbie, Not only are is our digital textbook platform available on any device, they also include text-to-speech that reads material aloud so students can rest their eyes entirely, adjustable font sizes and styles, customizable background colors including dark and sepia modes designed to reduce eye strain, and offline access so material can be worked through without being online. These features exist precisely because we recognise that reach student has slightly different preferences and the added accessibility features allow you to customise your textbook to your needs. This goes well beyond what a fixed printed textbook can offer. Digital textbooks and these features most certainly provide all students with enhanced flexibility. You no longer need to carry physical textbooks around in order to study - you can access your textbook on any device, at any time - with all of your notes, highlighting and annotation following you, despite not having to carry this with you. Our previous offers regarding individual sessions to assist you and ensure you get the best experience from your textbooks remain, should you wish to engage on this. I would like to clarify that I fully understand the features you are describing, and I have already tried adjusting settings such as font size, background colour, and other available options. Unfortunately, this does not resolve the issue I am experiencing.
My concern is not about the functionality of the platform, but about the physical strain of studying from a screen for extended periods. Even with these adjustments, my eyes become sore, and it makes it very difficult for me to work through the material effectively.
While features such as text-to-speech may be useful in some situations, they do not replace the need to actively read, revise, and engage with the content when preparing for exams.
I have also tried to adapt by printing the one module that was available in PDF, and this has significantly improved my ability to study. This clearly shows that having access to physical material makes a real difference in my case.
