I was employed by a local metropolitan council and retired in January 2015. In 2003 my area branch and myself, opposed a proposal from my union, Imatu for accepting a salary negotiation that included the diminishing of my medical aid contribution as paid to me by my employer that would ultimately phase this benefit out to a minimum monetary value and even possibly completely. The union accepted this in spite of my appeal to retain my prevailing benefit, whilst the correct decision is to accept the new terms for new employees, but retain the prevailing benefit for existing members. Thousands of unsuspected Imatu members on a national basis, both active and retired, are now financially worse off and will have to eventually surrender their medical aid membership due to affordability. I have contacted the following bodies for assistance without receiving a solution: The SAHRC, SA Consumer's Council and FEDUSA. There seems to be no overseeing authority over the Union sector and the elected officials have failed their members in breach of contract to protect their member-rights. I, and thousands of other members need my/our prevailing percentage benefit as at June 2003 to be re-instated.
