Reconsider what kind of fridge-freezer to buy
We bought an LG fridge-freezer in April 2025. Three weeks after delivery, the appliance lost all power – nothing worked. About 11 months on, the appliance again lost all power and stopped working. It was and is still dead.

05 Mar 2026, 14:30 The same technician who had attended the first outage arrived on March 3 at 2pm (the second day without a fridge-freezer). He said that a particular cable/part involved in/causing the problem could not be repaired, but instead would have to be replaced. He also said it was probably the same cable/part that caused the initial problem almost 11 months ago. But, this cable/part is not available in South Africa and has to be ordered from LG in Seoul, South Korea (where the LG headquarters are based).
At the end of the third day without a fridge-freezer on March 4, nobody had contacted us to give us an update on whether the part had been ordered, and, if it had been ordered, when it could be expected to arrive in South Africa.
By this time we had lost trust in the product (and in the official service company who failed to keep us up to date). We sent them an email telling them this and saying we would prefer a full refund to be made since the cable that failed had initially given problems within three weeks of purchase in 2025.
On the fourth day without a fridge-freezer, March 5, we had not been contacted by anybody with regard to any progress in solving our problem. We telephoned the repair centre, but the spokesperson for this official LG repairs centre said that she could not meet our demands since her province as service administrator was that of repairs and since more than six months had lapsed since purchase, we were entitled only to repairs. She also did not update us on whether the part had been ordered from South Korea, nor when it could be expected to arrive.
At the end of the third day without a fridge-freezer on March 4, nobody had contacted us to give us an update on whether the part had been ordered, and, if it had been ordered, when it could be expected to arrive in South Africa.

A new class action lawsuit claims LG sold refrigerators equipped with defective linear compressors that can fail suddenly, leaving consumers with appliances that no longer cool, spoiled food and costly repair or replacement expenses.

In fact, they have been so professional as to offer lending us another fridge-freezer to use while we wait on LG to do what it must, which is to give us credit for the non-functioning appliance.
