On Saterday, 19/07/2025, at 4:50 at Or Tambo international airport, at the third from right security gate, my carry-on was search without my permission.
I walked through the metal detector to collect my bags, moving my bags and the plastic crate with my smaller things down the line. The security person walked to me and asked if the bag belonged to me. I confirmed and the security person started opening my bag to search it. At no point was I asked if my bag may be searched, nor was I told why my bag is being searched.
The security person, removed items from my bag placing them on the counter, some items were set to one side.
These items were: - Zip ties - Allen key set - Bicycle multi-tool set (not victrinox or leatherman) - CO2 compresses air canister, 25ml in volume
I was told these items are not allowed in my carry-on and had to be checked in. I have brought all the above mentioned items with me on previous flights, passed through security without being stopped or asked about these items.
I requested a list of the prohibited items to confirm if my items were on the list, neither the security person or the supervisor on duty could provide me with a list. They claimed the airline should have a list at check-in. My items were not on the list of prohibited items shown at the check-in desk.
As my check-in bag was already checked in I had to check in a second bag to take my item with me. These were items required for the bicycle race I was attending the next day.
On my flight back, at King Shaka, I saw a list of prohibited items on the wall on my way to the security gate. As far as my knowledge goes this is not the case at Or Tambo.
From the airport side, clearly displaying the list of prohibited items prior tot the security gate and having a copy of the list at the security gate is strongly recommended.
Secondly, informing and asking the person whose bag is to be searched is required by South African law.
