On 28 April 2025 at 14:55 I made a payment of R540 which was for the cart rental. The amount included their R200 stipulated deposit. The cart was returned in a good condition and I was told that the deposit will be refunded within 10.days. Today it is 22 April 2025 the deposit is still outstanding. Efforts to reach them on the phone has been unsuccessful.

Very disappointing visit. We saw hardly any animals- every second cage, especially that of the wild cats and primitives, as well as the Australian section, is empty. Enclosures are not well mantained- broken walls and empty/abandoned cages are not taken care of. The terraces remain closed and abandoned which allows for very little view of the lions and tiger. There is no aviary. The Apies river is filthy- littered with clothing and *******. Beer bottles litter look out points and picnic areas. The gondolas and kids area is closed. No operating restaurants or kiosks. One or two animals in each cage, besides the Buffalo and flamingo. Very sad.

The Pretoria Zoo needs to stop marketing itself as "one of the top zoos in the world" - downright false advertising. This past weekend 29/06/2024 I took my family to the zoo, I wish I had read the reviews before going. It was a downright disappointing experience to say the least. There are hardly any animals and the few that are there look malnourished, depressed and drugged. The elephant kraal had NO water - the makeshift waterhole that was there was completely dried out. I'm suprised the zoo hasn't been closed down for animal cruelty. It is dilipidated, people are allowed to braai, drink and mess as they please. The gardens themselves are not well kept and it was not a pleasure to be there at all. Is this the price we pay for freedom? Those animals need to be removed and the place closed down.

On the 4th of November 2023, my family and I eagerly visited the Pretoria zoo, hoping to share a memorable experience surrounded by nature's wonders. As an avid nature *****, I had high expectations for the zoo, envisioning a place where animals were well-cared for and their habitats were preserved. However, our visit left us deeply concerned about the state of the zoo and the well-being of its inhabitants. This letter's aim is to shed light on the disappointing conditions we encountered, emphasizing the need for improved animal welfare and transparency within zoos. Lack of Value for Money Having paid in full for five family members, consisting of three adults and two children, we expected a fulfilling experience that justified the cost. Unfortunately, we felt deceived as the majority of the main attractions were closed. This lack of transparency regarding the unavailability of key exhibits left us feeling cheated and undervalued as visitors. The zoo management should have provided clear information about the closures, allowing us to make an informed decision before purchasing our tickets. Poor Animal Conditions The most distressing aspect of our visit was witnessing the poor condition of the animals. Instead of vibrant and healthy creatures, we encountered depressed-looking animals confined to inadequate enclosures. It was disheartening to see them pacing back and forth, displaying signs of distress and boredom. The lack of enrichment and stimulation in their environments was evident, raising concerns about their overall well-being. Missing Animal Partners Another disconcerting observation was the absence of animal partners within the enclosures. Many species thrive in social groups, and the separation of these animals can lead to severe psychological distress. Witnessing solitary animals, such as primates and big cats, left us deeply saddened. Zoos should prioritize providing appropriate companionship for these animals, ensuring their mental and emotional needs are met. Pollution and Ill-Treatment Our disappointment extended beyond the animal conditions, as we also noticed pollution in the streams and waterways within the zoo. These habitats are crucial for the well-being of aquatic species, and their contamination raises concerns about the overall health of the ecosystem. Additionally, we were appalled to witness a staff member attempting to kick a pea****. Such ill-treatment of animals is unacceptable and reflects a lack of professionalism and empathy within the zoo's staff. Our visit to the zoo on the 4th of November 2023 left us feeling cheated and disheartened. The lack of value for money, poor animal conditions, missing animal partners, pollution, and ill-treatment of animals were all significant issues that need urgent attention. Zoos should prioritize the welfare of their inhabitants, ensuring they are provided with suitable environments and companionship. Transparency regarding closures and ongoing efforts to improve animal welfare is essential to regain the trust of visitors. It is our responsibility as consumers and nature *****s to demand better standards and advocate for the well-being of animals in captivity.
