One star is way too many for this facility. I booked a Mother's day massage and it was literally the most painful massage ever. I communicated several times to the the****** to reduce pressure but this was never done. I was told I am unfit hence the pain of the massage. The the****** was rude and front of house staff did not wear a mask. I left feeling in pain, horrified at the experience and customer service. Management did call back after formal complaint laid. They did apologize but unfortunately for the amount of money spent for a service that was completely horrid that does not cut it for me. Will never go back again. Rather spend your money at the Saxon, Four seasons or The Leonardo spa. Trust me, do not go here.

On 2017/01/21 at approx 13h00 I proceed to Pravina’s Salon in Gateway. My stylist is Joann. I had booked to have a perm done.

I am a 25yr old female and have naturally straight hair which is about 25cm long from root to tip. I have been re-growing my hair from August 2015 as I cut my long hair
and donated it to CANSA to commemorate my mother’s 10 year anniversary of being in remission from breast cancer.

I am 25 and have been going to Pravina’s Chatsworth, then Pavillion and now to their Gateway branch for at least 10 years.

I showed Joann 3 pictures of what I wanted and she stated that she would do it for me. At no stage did she mention the look could not be reached on my hair.

My mum who was present with me at all times stated to her that I wanted it such that I could run my fingers through the curls like she used to do when she had previously permed her hair in the 90’s.
My mother stated that the effect was obtained with the use of the bigger perm rods.

Joann and the owner Pravina consulted with each other and suggested that they would use a mixture of perm rod sizes.

They started on my hair at 13h30 and was completed at 18h30 with the various procedures. Pravina and Joann constantly chatted to each other during this entire process.

I had told Joann during the process that the rods were very loose as they were falling this way and that. I have taken pictures before, during and after the perm.

The final result was nothing close to the pictures I showed her. I paid a sum of R2000 and a further R 750 for products and left.

I mentioned to my mother that I was very unhappy and that was not what I asked for, nor was it what was promised to me by Joann.

Upon closer investigation I observed and noticed that from the roots to just below the ear there was no clear definition of ringlet curls as would be expected with a perm.

My mother called Joann immediately (21/01/2017 at 18h54) as we were still in the centre getting something to eat.

During the conversation Joann basically stated the reason the perm looked this way was because bigger rods were used as they should have used smaller rods.

However, my mother informed her that irrespective of the size of the rods that was used there was still no defined curl even where the smaller rods were used.
Joann stated another perm could not be done and that I had to come back after a few washes and they would see what they could do.

On the 23/01/2017 my mother again called Joann at the Westville branch at 10h54 and informed her that on Sunday(22/01) when my hair was checked at 2 other salons in Gateway, we were informed that 1)the curl was not checked to ensure that the perm was “taking”, and 2)it should have been left on longer, and 3)it should have been wound more tightly.

My mother informed her that at this stage that my hair was looking washed out and 6 mnths old and I was not going to wear it untied as it was looking very untidy.

Joann stated we must give it 2 weeks and she will see what can be done and that she had informed Pravina already. Joann also stated that she will redo the perm , winding it tightly and using smaller rods. She also stated that over the years products have changed and what my mother had done is different to what is being used now. Joann further stated that it wasn’t a problem and they would sort it out.

On the 25/01/2017 at 13h42 my mother again called Joann as I had been suffering with headaches having my hair tied up all the time. Joann suggested that I must return on Sunday(29/01) to redo the perm. My mother asked her whether they will they follow the entire procedure again and she stated that they will have to. My mother enquired whether it would be better to rather do a Brazillian to straighten my hair. Joann stated she was worried to redo the perm as I had brown on the ends of my hair that was coloured black, and the redo of the perm would cause breakage. If I did the Brazillian the hair would be in a better condition. An appointment was confirmed for 9am on Sunday (29/01/2017), Joann stated she will look at my hair and decide what will be done.

On 29/01/2017 at approx. 9am I was at the salon and Joann asked us again what we would like to do. My mother pointed out to her the absence of curls and also stated to her that it is obvious that the lack of curls has nothing to do with the size of rods that was used. My mother also informed Joann that she was disappointed that Pravina who has decades of experience did not take “ownership” that the perm had not taken, and pretended that all was fine lording on the compliments of how good my hair looked. Joann stated that when something like this happens they do whatever to sort it out. Joann further stated it was not Pravinas fault as I am her client so it is her fault. My mother also stated that the best state of a perm is when you leaving the salon and only gets looser as the days go by.
My mother also informed Joann that my hair was still smelling from a distance of perm lotion even after I had washed it at home.

Basically a Brazillian was applied to my hair and although a lot of the curls were removed it was still wavy which I informed her about stating that my hair was pin straight and takes time to set every morning and now it is even going to take longer. My mother also asked Joann whether I will be getting a part refund of the R2000 spent on the perm, as a Brazillian on my hair would not have costed as much, because my mother’s hair is slightly shorter than mine only costed R1000. She just stated that we would not be charged for the Brazillian and that the product cost money. My mother stated it was not my fault that I needed the Brazillian because in actual fact I paid and wanted a perm. The Brazillian took 4 hours. My mother also pointed out to her that we had spent two days of 5 hrs and 4 hrs respectively as well combined with the unnecessary inconvenience. Joann stated she would speak to Billy(Pravinas husband and co owner) and get back to me on Monday(30/01). My mother even stated that she did not expect the full refund even a part (R500). Before leaving I returned the 2 products as I did not need them as it was for permed hair and they were unused. Joann also stated that the next time I come in for a trim she would do a treatment for me with no charge.

I did not receive any communication from Joann so on the 5/02/2017 I returned to Pravina’s Gateway and spoke to Joann who stated that she will definitely get back to us next week as she has told Billy to contact us. I showed her how dry and damaged the ends of my hair was.

On the 8/02/2017 Joann called my mother stating that Pravinas would not be able to do a refund because they have already done a perm which was R2000 and the Brazillian. My mother pointed out to her that the perm was not successful, and the Brazillian had not taken out all the curls which was not communicated to me as a possibility. Joann again stated that the only solution was the MK= Brazillian. Joann stated that a lot of money was spent on the products. However my mother pointed out to her that what I paid for was not what I was given and the loss should be Pravinas not the clients. Joann stated she will give me a free treament but my mother pointed out to her that in order for her to get a free treatment I will have to pay R 300 for a wash and set in order to get a R300 treatment free. Joann stated she would do it completely at no cost, as well as a trim. My mother then stated to her that one treatment was not going to solve the problem. Joann then stated that it would not be just one and she would work it out and get back to her later that day.

Later at 15h06 Eddie from Gateway called my mother stating that they were going to give me a free wash, cut and treatment and set at no charge. my mother re iterated all her concerns to Eddie as she had relayed it to Joann on their various communications. Eddie then stated he would get back to her.

On 9/02/2017 at 16h09 Eddie again called with the same offer stating that the Brazillian=MK costed R2500 and I was not charged for that so that was all they could do. My mother stated that she was not happy and will be referring the matter to consumer watch.

My disappointment is:

I am out R 2000 BUT I have neither a perm nor a MK Brazillian straight her. I am instead minus R 2000, damaged ends semi curly hair and have since observed severe dandruff in my hair which I did not have before. My scalp is very itchy and has severe stubborn dandruff to th extent that I cannot wear my hair open. I also cannot just use any treatment on my hair, as it has to be one that is compatible with Brazillian straightened hair, thus also adding additional cost.

I do have all conversations with Joann recorded.

The salon has yet to apologise, i cannot believe this is the customer service one recieves after being a loyal customer for so many years.

This experience will hopefully be an example to others, not to support such a disrespectful company who clearly has no integrity and is driven by sheer profit.
