Did not respond to emails/phone, refused to refund deposit

I booked 2 rooms as we were attending a wedding across the road from this establishment. After paying my deposit I emailed them requesting them to confirm receipt. I did not hear back and so tried phoning numerous times. Either no one answered the phone or I left a message on their voicemail. I still heard nothing. Eventually, after a week or so, they answered the phone when I requested cancellation of the booking and asked for my deposit back. The answer I got was a resounding NO. They weren't interested in listening to why I was cancelling and merely said my emails were not received and said nothing about all the phone calls I made that were ignored. I would recommend that people stay clear of this place and rather find somewhere else to stay.
