On Friday 25/09/2020 we bought bread rolls from Spar Cape Gate. The bag was sealed when I purchased it. The evening I made the hamburgers and the moment I opened the pack, it smelt of a chemical inside like nail polish remover or spirits. I thought that it was odd and asked my wife to smell it as well we then assumed it was the plastic packaging that might be the culprit. We didn't think much of it and continued making the burgers, but the first bite my wife took had an over whelming taste of chemicals. We put the burger toppings onto bread but it had already pulled into the food its self. We had to throw away all the food we just made. The next day I personally took the unused bread rolls and a piece of the bread with some toppings on back to spar with this overwhelming smell. At this point my wife was not feeling very well. I spoke to the manager who gave me documents to take my wife to the doctor as a possibility of food poisoning, The manager asked that we give her a call that afternoon at 14:00. By this time My wife felt fine so we did not see the need to go to the doctor and pay R400.00 to justify the purchase of R12.00 buns that might be contaminated. I contacted spar again who ensured me that they will give me feedback and said that the owners felt that we have to go to the doctor to be sure. We then asked to resume the matter on Monday 28/09/2020 so we can enjoy our weekend, as this obviously left a bad taste, as the whole situation made us feel that we were the culprits and even worse made us feel like we did this to ourselves. Once my wife explained that if the doctor found nothing to be wrong who would cover the costs the answer was: "we could see" from there. We have been made to feel like we are in the wrong. I contacted them again today the 28/09/2020 and was told that there have been no other complaints and they will be more than happy to give us a voucher for our trouble. This has been a very unpleasant experience where we have had to call for feedback and updates and made to feel like we are liars. What will be done in future regarding something like this? What if it happened to someone that could not afford it, ore what if the food was given to children?
