I have had terrible experiences booking accomodation with this company. Because my first booking with them was for an American hotel it thinks that my subsequent dealings are in dollars, even though I am in South Africa, booking a South African stay in South Africa Rands, and so I am charged an Internation Transaction fee by the bank. This happenened once before and I had to really battle to have it reversed. Now it has happened again. When I phone them I explain the problem (once I get past the AI dialogue) I get put on hold and then cut off. Or else I get promised a call back. All to no avail. Terrible service!
This review is for the management of Gondwana, or rather I should say the mismanangement. The actual Pioneer Trail was great - but the reservations are run from an office in Bellville and they seem to have no communication with the reserve staff. We filled in an online pre-checkin form, and this info did not get to the Camp Manager and staff - meal requests and bed arrangements were not passed on. We had to have medical certificates, to say we are fit to walk and to mention any medical conditions - the Ranger and Camp Manager never saw these - if we had been allergic to anything, like beestings, they would not have been prepared. We were told that all costs were included, but when we had finished the trail we were billed for drinks we were offered with our lunch on arrival - this REALLY annoyed us! After the Trail we wrote to the management listing what we liked about our trip and what we thought they could do to improve the experience, but we have had absolutely no acknowledgement or feedback. It seems as if they are not at all interested once they have your money. At the first camp we were told that there was solar power and batteries, but at 8pm the lights all went out - it turns out the camp was operating on ESCOM power and there was loadshedding - but noone thought to inform us. Did they even know? The staff on the trail were pleasant and helpful, and did their best, but still need some guidence - eg there no napkins offered when we had finger snacks - we had to request them, no butter with the beakfast croissants - this had to be requested, and when it came was still frozen. When we arrived at the main gate, noone knew to which lodge to send us to meet our guide and to have lunch - we stood around while the gate guard was frantically phoning around. This is a very expensive trail, and I would have expected a lot better.
Terrible experience at CTFM Steenberg last night : one member of our party ordered Kingklip and when it came it was overcooked and dry. We complained and were told she would get another piece but we had to chase up with the manager several times before another finally arrived - more than 45 minutes later. By then the rest of us had finished our main meal, and she had nibbled at the dried-out piece of fish a little because she was so hungary. When the bill came they wanted to charge us full price for the fresh fish, plus 50% extra for the dried-out piece of fish, because she had eaten some of it. This restuarant has recently changed management, and if last night's experience is anything to go by, it will not last long at all. We saw two parties walk out without ordering because of bad service. There was a lot of noise, and it was a bad experience - I would give it zero stars if I could. We used to frequent this restuarant often but will not be back.
One of our party ordered Kingklip - when it came it was overcooked and dried out. We complained and eventually - about 45 minutes later - a new piece arrived, but we had had to complain to the manager several times to get it! And then they wanted to charge us full price for the new piece and 50% for the old dried-out piece because it had been partially eaten! New management - they won't last long! We used to go there often but we won't be back.
