Planet fitness took no action when their employee continuously harassed me
This is my experience with Planet Fitness: Upon filling out the online enquiry to join the gym, one of the employees (a salesman) took my number and contacted me to join the gym. He then proceeded to flirt with me, comment on my statuses, and my profile pictures, and ask me out on dates and after declining multiple times, he continued. I eventually had to tell me to leave me alone, which followed with him calling me. I felt too uncomfortable to go to the gym and wanted to cancel my membership. What a mission!! After countless calls, emails and even a meeting with their management team, I got nowhere. I was told they will investigate further and they made little to no effort to contact me back. During the meeting, they interrogated me and defended the employee who harassed me. They even said: if I wanted a strictly professional business relationship with the salesman, I should have said so. Implying it was my responsibility to put in healthy working boundaries and ethics, these two male managers were indirectly condoning exactly what the employee did. They blamed me for not having boundaries - because declining offers to go on dates with the employee, was not enough. They generously offered me the opportunity to either transfer gym locations or pay that months gym fee (which was for January) despite having sent my cancellation letter already in December (which I paid in full for December). I said there was no way this was happening. I contacted legal advise who said to terminate the contract with immediate effect as their employee had breached the POPI Act by using my personal contact information gained through their website, for personal advances. They had also failed to protect my personal information against this man. All this being said, they have now debited my account with over R4000 for the cancellation fee which I find disturbing, considering they took no responsibility for violating the contract and failing to adhere to the POPI act. To this day, the employee has faced no consequences to my knowledge. I will fight this. I will not give them another cent, not because of anything other than my values, morals and principles. A gym should be a safe place for woman - not a place where a woman is harassed, left feeling uncomfortable, disrespected and unheard. Planet Fitness - its 2024 not 1924. Do better.
