Duroc Hospital

Pain management is not drug addiction
HelloPeter. I am deeply disappointed and emotionally exhausted by the treatment my family received at the OPD department of Durdoc Private Hospital. What should have been a place of compassion, urgency, and professionalism has instead become a source of frustration, helplessness, and emotional distress. My brother suffers from an extremely painful medical condition that causes severe and debilitating headaches on a daily basis. Because of the intensity of the pain, we have had to visit the OPD department regularly for emergency pain management. Instead of being met with empathy and proper medical care, we have increasingly felt judged, dismissed, and treated as though our suffering is an inconvenience rather than a genuine medical emergency. The most heartbreaking part is that there appears to be a growing assumption from some staff members that because my brother frequently requires strong pain medication, he is somehow seeking drugs rather than seeking relief from unbearable pain. This perception is not only unfair, but incredibly insensitive and dangerous. No patient should be made to feel ashamed for needing pain management, especially when they are already physically and emotionally suffering. What made this experience particularly upsetting was that despite the severe pain my brother was experiencing, he was intentionally given a significantly weaker injection that clearly did not address the seriousness of his condition. It felt as though assumptions and personal judgments were prioritized over actual patient care. The financial burden involved makes the experience even more painful. Paying approximately R7000 for ambulance services and another R3000 for OPD treatment, only to leave without adequate pain relief or compassionate care, is incredibly disheartening. Families do not spend this kind of money for luxury or convenience — we do so because we are desperate for help and trusting medical professionals to act in the best interests of patients. I understand that healthcare workers face immense pressure daily, and I respect the difficult work that doctors and nurses do. However, professionalism and compassion should never disappear simply because a patient becomes a regular visitor. Chronic pain patients deserve dignity, understanding, and proper medical attention — not suspicion, dismissal, or emotional neglect. I sincerely hope Durdoc Private Hospital takes this complaint seriously and reflects on how patients dealing with severe ongoing pain are treated within the OPD department. No family should leave a hospital feeling unheard, judged, and abandoned after seeking help in a moment of desperation.
