It has taken me some time to write this review as my whole family was traumatised by the events that took place during our last visit to River Valley Resort in October 2024 for my 51st birthday. I apologise in advance for the long post, but it is important to me that I present this bizarre story as I understand it. We had frequented River Valley with our family for many years, in fact, since my children were 7 and 9 years old. If you follow reviews, you will note that some complain about the elderly residents and the fact that there is no beach access. Some say that the place is not kept well. We were never bothered with the elderly residents. The beach access became a problem after the KZN storms, but beach access is a short drive away, and whether you are camping or booking a chalet, the facilities have always been well kept, with clean bathrooms, decently appointed chalets, beautiful gardens, a lovely pool area, and a games room for the kids. We loved going there with my kids, my brothers kids, and my good friends family. Sadly, we will never return. In October 2024, we booked 2 chalets and a camp site for our family and my good friend's family. We were excited that the small restaurant on the premises had reopened after being closed the last few times we had been there. We agreed that our group of 7 would lunch at the pub on the Saturday afternoon. As it turned out, there was a private party taking place at the restaurant, and we decided not to intrude and let them enjoy themselves, and if the party was over by evening, we would go up and have some dinner. It was still quite rowdy by evening, so we decided we would make a bonfire at the beautiful bonfire area. The kids (now 17 x 2 and 19) were excited about making a bonfire. There are usually piles of free wood available for this, but because it had been drizzling, the wood was wet, and we were struggling. A pub patron happened to pass by and advised we should go up to the restaurant and buy wood there. One of the things we have loved about this place is that it felt like a safe family environment. We had no qualms sending our 19-year-old daughter and my 17-year-old son, with his friend, to go buy some wood. Kids being kids, they bargained buying Monsters as part of the deal. A monster usually costs R20, so we estimated that R100 would be enough for 2 monsters and a pack of wood. The kids were gone for some time, and as I started to get worried, they returned visibly upset. From the mouths of babes: They went to the barlady and asked if they could buy a pack of wood and 3 monsters. The bar lady advised that they only had Red Bull. My kids have no idea how much Red Bull costs; they know it is more expensive than Monster but assumed R100 would still cover the bill. The bar lady gave them the redbulls and the wood, took the R100, and provided them change. My daughter (a young 19-year-old) said at this point there was a man acting strangely towards her, and she was pushing her brother to leave quickly. It was at this point that things turned ugly. The bar manager accused them of not paying for the wood and trying to ***** the wood and confronted my 17-year-old son to a point where he physically pushed my son in the chest. The kids didn't know what to do. None of them had ever experienced this kind of aggression. They left the wood and came back to the bonfire area, visibly distraught. My husband (the only adult male with us at the time) went up to the bar to clear up what had clearly been a misunderstanding, but on arrival he saw there were quite a few intoxicated characters at the bar, and the bar manager seemed intoxicated as well. My husband decided wisely not to raise the issue with the bar manager but did ask him if we could please buy some wood, to which the bar manager aggressively rep**** that the pub and restaurant were for locals only and that my kids are *******. After my husband returned, we tried to call the resort management. It was by now about 8.30 pm. The admin lady was very kind and tried to help us, but the resort owner refused to talk to us. We considered calling the police to report the bar manager assaulting my son, but we were correctly advised by a police friend who we had called, that because we (the adults) had had a few drinks, the police would not take us seriously. With no recourse and no support from the resort owner, we agreed to pack it up and leave at first light. We did not feel safe. My children were in tears. The next morning we packed up and shipped out. As we dropped the keys at the front desk, the owner finally appeared and greeted me with a hearty good morning. I rep**** and said, 'It is not a good morning, and you know it'. He immediately became redfaced and shouted, 'What was I supposed to do?' We left. Weekend ruined. Kids traumatised. Husband questioning whether he did the right thing by not challenging the bar manager. Me questioning whether I did the right thing by not calling the police on this bully. We will never return. I don't think they really care. We are mild-mannered people; it took a long time for us to move on from what could have happened to our son. We were not there when it happened. Maybe the kids were cheeky when the bar manager accused them of *****ing. We have tried to understand why the bar manager was physically aggressive towards them—a grown man. We will never know, but they are good kids, and the right thing to do is to approach the parents—we were right there; you could see us from the pub. The right thing for the resort owner to do was to come down and talk to us, but we were left to defend ourselves. I have heard nothing on the matter from the resort since then. They emailed to say we left a towel behind; I said they could keep it or throw it away. I have since read other reviews of the resort. I know the owner has a tendency to respond defensively. I expect nothing less in this case. I don't need a response. We attempted to call you a dozen times that night. Surely, as a responsible resort owner, you could have at least called us back. I don't know if this assists others who are considering going there. I felt compelled to express myself at last. River Valley, you have lost custom across 4 families that have been loyal customers and supporters for 10 years.

We've spent many a happy camping trip at River Valley Resort - Pennington (even got stuck here during the first lock down period) The caravan park / ablutions are clean and well maintained and is definitely worth a visit if you're planning a trip to the KZN South Coast.

Stayed at River valley resort in Pennington from 9 to 11 Aigust 2019. We left cooked meat and potato salad for the staff in two separate pots. Sarie deducted R650 from our deposit saying that the pots, lids and two cups were missing.
