Horrible food and service. The only reason they still exist is because its the only German restaurant in Clarens and people think it will be a cool experience. Stay far away!

My wife and i went there for breakfast. There were about 40 guests. We sat down and after 20 minutes nobody attended to us. The next moment two male waiters stood beside us and had a very loud conversation without there masks on. They spoke so loud that there spit landed on both of our faces. We were very disgusted because of the Covid 19 rules that were blatantly ignored and that we could easily be affected in the next couple of days. We still asked for assistance but were totally ignored. So we stood up after 30 minutes and reported the matter to the manager or owner, but they just looked at us and went on with there c****s. So, if you are looking for a restaurant where you can pick up Covid, visit this German restaurant in Clarens in the Freestate.

For a proper German experience, from the writing of the menu, tasking the beer and then the German food. This is a must stop for dinner. They also have a very nice "Bakery" section that has a wide variety of sweets and treats that you can buy. Definitely worth a stop, great view from the deck as well.

Poorest experience I have ever had to date. Gay hating establishment, non customer centric mentality, slower service than local municipalities and a snide, narcissist as an owner/manager that should not deal with the public. What's not to love? To avoid disappointment for short stays in Clarens I highly suggest you avoid this like the plague it is in South Africa.

Great food and the service is good. Keep in mind this is not a fast food restaurant, quality takes time! The vibe is relaxed but joyous. The view is amazing. It is kids friendly. What makes this restaurant so special is that they sell true german sauces and products as well as beer. They have a deli where you can buy some delicious treats like home made nougat and truffles to take along for the road. PS : The brownies are the absolute best!!!

A few years ago, we had a lovely experience at Roter Hahn, which must have been a very rare, good day for them. Each time we visit Clarens, we go there hoping for the same great food, service and expierence, but instead walk away in disappointment over and over again. Well lesson learnt: The last weekend in February 2020, while attending a wedding, we hoped to grab a warm and filling breakfast on the Sunday, before heading back home to Pretoria. To save me from typing a book here, let me keep it simple: The service was bad, wrong beers were brought to the table, the food is extremely overpriced for small portions and the warm platter for two, which we've ordered before and was previously ok, was now a disaster: an excuse of one tiny pretzel and the rest was enough for one person AS AN APPETIZER. Luckily, we could send it back and order something else, but the manager had quite an attitude problem and made us feel unwelcome. The atmosphere was dull, the smoking section is very close to the non-smoking section with no divider in between. The only great thing about this place is the view and the deli. I can hardly see how Roter Hahn will make it in the future...

On 03/01/2019 we had brunch and drank a couple beers , we had 4 La Trappe Blonde on tap , on the menu the price listed for 300ml was R 65-00 , the glas it was seved in was marked 0.25 L ( 250ml ) , the account presented to me showed R 65-00 for 330 ml. I complained and request the waiter even before the account was delivered that I am not prepared to be charged for 300/330 ml but only to receive 250ml. He spoke to management but they did not fix my account and I was presented with a bill for R 56-00 for 330 ml of the mentioned beer . I then spoke to management and it was an issue to resolve the situation , the lady even told me at a stage that the price for the 300 and 250 ml is the same on their system so I the bill is correct. I insisted that I would not accept the situation and eventually they removed one beer form the account . According to my calculation they make an extra R 15-00 profit per glass with this by presenting a smaller glass than advertised.
