During the Covid-19 period, I joined Teneo Online School and completed my matric in 2021. When the results were released, I wasn’t satisfied with my performance, so I decided to improve my marks. In 2022, I registered for supplementary exams—two subjects in the May/June session and two more for the end-of-year exams. Unfortunately, I still didn’t reach my goals for two of the subjects, which meant I had to try again.
In 2023, I registered once more for the May/June exams, hoping to finally pass those subjects. Sadly, I failed again. Because SACAI closes exam applications early in the year, I had no choice but to wait until 2024 to register for another attempt. I remained hopeful and determined to succeed.
In 2024, I registered for the May/June exams again. On the day of my first exam, the invigilator told me I wasn’t registered for that subject. I explained that it must be a mistake and asked her to confirm with SACAI, but she refused. I had to call SACAI myself, and they corrected the error. However, I started the exam 45 minutes late, and the invigilator refused to give me extra time—even though the mistake wasn’t mine.
I reported the matter to SACAI, and they said they would investigate. A few days ago, I called Umalusi to follow up, and they confirmed that the investigation is still pending. Nothing can be done until SACAI releases the outcome of their findings. Meanwhile, the SACAI staff member who had been helping me, Morakane, became unreachable. I later found out through a Umalusi consultant that she no longer works at SACAI. SACAI never informed me about this change, which made the situation even more difficult.
Because I don’t have a Umalusi-stamped NSC certificate, I couldn’t apply to university or for bursaries. After many calls in January 2025, SACAI gave me a document showing my combined results. A private college accepted me with that document at the last minute, which was a relief. However, I wanted to transfer to another institution, but I can’t without the official certificate.
This delay has also affected my family financially. My father works for UNISA, and they offer a benefit that covers 50% of tuition fees. Unfortunately, they require the Umalusi-stamped NSC certificate to release the funds. Because I don’t have it, my family is missing out on this support, which has added more pressure to an already difficult situation.
