On June 27, 2025, we purchased a Leonardo dining room table with six chairs from SEDGARS , Springfield, Durban. I was initially assisted by the sales representative, Nokwazi Langa, and the deal was finalized with the manager, Mr. Laurence. Tahira Kahan handled the payment and issued our invoice and receipts.
Sedgars delivered a second-hand table that was old, heavily scratched, and missing *****s.
My main concern is that Sedgars did not initially admit that the table was a second-hand floor model. I discovered this only after the delivery, based on the following issues:
1. I recorded a video of the marble table and chairs in the store, and the marble pattern in the video was identical to the table that was delivered. 2. The table and its stand had noticeable scratches, for which I have photographic proof. 3. Some *****s were missing during installation. 4. Rubber marks from the Lazy Susan were already present on the table surface before any Lazy Susan was installed. 5. When I called Tahira Kahan to verify if the table on display was still in the store, she hesitated and then responded. Upon my request for a photo via WhatsApp, she admitted that it was the floor model table and chairs. 6. There was no original packaging for the table and stand. 7. The delivery personnel were dishonest and insisted that the table was picked up from the warehouse.
When I complained, I requested a refund letter before the second-hand goods were dispatched with their driver. There was a delay in providing this letter, as Tahira Kahan explained she was waiting for a standard letter from head office. The standard letter included a statement claiming, “We were under the impression you needed the unit urgently, therefore the decision was made to provide the unit from our sales floor.” This statement is false. Why would anyone pay for brand-new furniture and accept a second-hand set?
This incident raised further concerns after reading previous Google reviews about Sedgars. It appears this is their usual practice. Had I read those reviews beforehand, I would never have purchased from Sedgars. Additionally, the same salesperson was involved in previous incidents, and we were also deceived by the manager—something quite disappointing coming from someone in his position.
We are now left without a table and have been waiting a week for our refund. The company accepted cash for the purchase but has a policy of no cash refunds. Furthermore, they seem to be falsely advertising a four-seater table as a six-seater. This issue should be reported to the relevant authorities for investigation.
