Van Rayhan was raising a shared boundary vibacrete wall on behalf of my neighbor. I negotiated the height of the wall with the neighbor beforehand, only to see on the day of installation that the wall went up another slab, to more than 2.2m. Upon confrontation, the man got aggressive, intimidating and shouted 'bully' all the time. I am a kind person and well respected in our neighborhood and in Plumstead. Besides this completely inappropriate behaviour, the craftsmanship of my side of the wall is poor in terms of finish and alignment. I have reported this incident to the Building & Planning Department Plumstead, and it will be investigated. Pls beware of Spike & Raise. I fully agree with the previous reviewer.

Verreyn from Spike & Raise in Plumstead, Cape Town, put up spikes on my fence, but had to raise the brackets on the gates. When he arrived he was already in a foul mood, because his welder could not come until later that day. When he eventually started work on my 2nd gate, he asked for the keys to open the cover for the gate motor. I told him I didn't know he needed them, otherwise I would have asked my tenant to leave the keys behind. He then threw a hissy fit telling me he can't wait for the tenant to bring the key and said it was my responsibility to provide the key right now (huh?) and he had told me that he needed them (no, he didn't, and I'm not senile). He then stuck a *****driver into the lock to break it open. He called someone for instructions how to disconnect the motor and I watched him pulling out all sorts of connections on the circuit board. I left him to it and went into my house for a while. When I came back he was still fiddling around with it while his guys were struggling to put back the gate. When I asked him what is wrong with it he shouted "I told you already and now I am telling you again for the last time..." (huh? excuse me?). I just wanted to offer my help by calling the company who installed the gate motor and my electrician (at my own expense). I could see he was so angry at everything that I left again. After a while he came to tell me he finished the job and wanted the balance of the payment, which I gave him.

The next day the gate stopped working and I called my gate motor people to have a look. It turned out that when he opened and closed the gate for me to see that all was working, the motor ran off the battery and did not recharche because the electricity was disconnected. I then called my electrician who confirmed that there was no problem on his side with the electric feed to the motor. Being at my wits end I then called Verreyn to explain to him what happened and to ask him (very nicely) what he disconnected because we can't find the problem. I didn't expect him to come or give him a bill, just tell us what he did. Oh boy, did I get an earful then from him, calling my gate people and electrician stupid (just stopped short before calling me stupid too), that everything worked when he left and I am only trying to put the blame on him, that I was supposed to provide the key etc.etc.( he was on speakerphone, so my electrician heard him ranting and raving, shaking his head in disbelieve). He wouldn't listen to me when I tried to explain that he disconnected something and we were trying to figure out what, and that I am not billing him for anything. He just kept on ranting how this was not his fault, and this was when I just about had enough of his verbal abuse and told him to stop (admittingly in a very loud voice). He then said he is not going to argue with me, that it's not his fault, which he explained to me already and he is not explaining it again....and hung up.
