We overnighted in Darling last Thursday on our way to a West Coast weekend away. The only restaurant open in the town was 1910 Old Forge in Langstraat, & did they take advantage of this fact, with zero alternatives. Corkage on own wine taken was R50/bottle. Their cheapest local wine (Darling Cellars/Cloof) was R350/bottle and their food prices exorbitant! On sitting down we asked for complimentary bread before ordering and were told by our waiter, Alex, “no bread until you have ordered food”! With no other restaurants open, and already 19:00, did he think we would consume the bread, then leave prior to eating a meal, like a bunch of students on a low budget heading to the nearest fast-food takeaway, of which there were also none! Despite the exorbitant food & wine prices, the food was excellent! Why they need to overcharge in a monopoly is a mystery!
