Dear Store Manager,
I am writing to lodge a formal complaint regarding a deeply upsetting incident that took place in your store on Saturday afternoon, 25 October.
My husband and I were the only customers in the store at the time. There were two female employees and one male employee on duty. Shortly after we arrived, I overheard the male employee speaking in his language and using the word “charou” in a mocking tone, followed by laughter. The two female employees soon joined in, laughing as they came closer.
I am Indian and I understand what "charou" means, I found this highly disrespectful. When I confronted them, they looked shocked and quickly apologized, with one claiming that the male employee was referring to the other assistant as a “charou.” Considering the context and timing — right after I entered the store — this explanation felt insincere and dismissive. All the employees were black so I failed to believe that story that they made up after I had told them that I could understand what they said.
This kind of behavior is completely unacceptable in any professional setting, especially one that serves the public. It made me feel humiliated and uncomfortable in a space where customers should feel welcome and respected.
I expect a formal apology from your business — either in writing or via a phone call — as acknowledgment of the offense caused. I also trust that you will take appropriate disciplinary action and ensure proper training so that this kind of conduct never happens again. I don't expect red carpet treatment but if an employee does not have anything positive to say, they should refrain from making such immature, "jokes" at the customer's expense.
Please contact me at your earliest convenience to discuss this matter further.
Sincerely
Angie Pillay
