Great dentist! Dr. Willanie Bouwer is kind, compassionate and even goes so far as to give special discounted rates to help people who can not afford medical aids. The most affordable dentist in Gauteng by far!

If I could give zero stars, I would. I phoned this practice several times to book an appointment and was told every time that there was “no availability.” To check whether I was being treated unfairly, my husband called only a short while later, speaking Afrikaans and suddenly there was an appointment available almost immediately. The difference in treatment spoke for itself. We never set foot in the practice, but the attitude we experienced over the phone was enough to make it very clear who is welcomed and who isn’t. Nobody should have to feel they’re being judged or dismissed based on who they are. People deserve fair and equal service, and this practice failed badly in that regard. I would strongly advise others to be aware of this before choosing a dentist. ****** still loud and proud in Eldoraigne!!

Booked an appointment with the dentist for a full dental check up and to address a broken tooth which is classified as a medical emergency. Got to the appointment and explained to her my background and the reasons why I haven't been to a dentist in 16 years. She asked me to leave her practice as she had the right to choose who she takes on as patients and that she didn't feel comfortable with me. Right of admission is understood however she clearly lacks normal human empathy for patients. She just re-confirmed my dislike of dentists and the whole industry as they don't treat you with compassion. Will never recommend her practice to anyone I know

On Wednesday, Dr. Bouwer extracted my tooth. I followed all her after-care instructions carefully. By Friday, I started experiencing severe pain and, after consulting with my family dentist back home (to whom I sent a video of the extraction site), I was advised I have dry socket. Since Friday, I have been trying to contact Dr. Bouwer’s practice. The phone went straight to voicemail, and despite calling continuously from Monday morning at 08:00 (their advertised business hours), my calls were either ignored or rejected. Family members had to intervene on my behalf, and each one was told a different story: • One was told there were no appointments available for two months. • Another was told the dry socket occurred because I was “rejecting the antibiotics.” • A friend was told I would be referred to a specialist. When my friend tried to arrange a conference call, the practice hung up as soon as she introduced herself. When my father managed to speak to Dr. Bouwer directly, she was extremely rude, dismissive, and full of attitude. She insisted that the situation was my fault, as the antibiotics “were not agreeing with me.” When my father asked if there was absolutely anything she could do to help, she simply said “no.” Later, Dr. Bouwer messaged me on WhatsApp, admitting she did not answer my calls on Friday because she was sick, adding that she doesn’t have to be “at anyone’s beck and call 24 hours a day.” (At no point did I demand 24-hour access – I simply expected assistance during business hours.) She then questioned whether I had taken the antibiotics at all and told me no one can force her to treat a septic/dry socket. Despite previously saying there were no appointments, she suddenly offered me one for 11:30 but then stated that “for both our conveniences” it would be better if I went to a specialist. She issued a referral letter, a sick note, and prescriptions (Stilpane, Mybulen, and mouthwash) even though I had not been physically seen by her that day – which I find highly unprofessional and questionable. When I told her I would be laying a complaint with the HPCSA because no other patient should be treated in this manner, she told me to go ahead as she had done her due diligence and could prove it. Yet not once did she advise me on what to do in the event of dry socket – a known, common complication of extractions. This entire experience has been distressing and unprofessional from start to finish. From ignored calls, contradictory explanations, and outright rudeness, to providing medical documents without an actual consultation, I feel completely failed as a patient. I trusted this dentist with my care, and instead, I was left in pain, dismissed, and treated disrespectfully. I believe patients deserve better accountability, professionalism, and compassion than what I received at Happy Family Dentist.

I regret to share that my experience with Happy Family Dentist was disappointing, and I would not recommend this practice. I initially visited Dr. Willanie for a root canal, a filling, and a tooth extraction. My first two appointments went smoothly, but within six months, I began experiencing significant pain in the same teeth that had been treated. Concerned, I reached out via email to request a follow-up consultation. Unfortunately, instead of addressing my dental concerns, the response focused solely on payment—stating that our previously agreed-upon payment arrangement was no longer valid and that a 12.5% monthly interest would be added to my outstanding balance. Additionally, the practice delayed submitting my claim to my medical aid by approximately three months. My medical aid had confirmed coverage for the full amount of R3,582.00, but due to the delay, my savings were depleted, and I became liable for the full payment. Despite this, I had been making consistent monthly payments as agreed. Dr. Willanie’s response was not only dismissive of my health concerns but also accusatory and unprofessional. She made unfounded assumptions about my behavior and withdrew the payment arrangement based on those assumptions. I found this approach to be both inappropriate and lacking in basic client service principles. After this experience, I had no choice but to seek treatment from another dentist to address my ongoing dental issues. This meant paying for a new consultation, updated X-rays, injections, and having the same filling redone on the tooth Dr. Willanie had worked on in January 2025. It’s been incredibly frustrating and disappointing to be out of pocket again for work that should have been resolved properly the first time. Patients deserve to be treated with respect, empathy, and professionalism—especially when dealing with medical issues. Sadly, that was not my experience. I’m sharing this review to help others make informed decisions when selecting a dental provider.
