I voluntarily admitted myself to Helderberg Clinic in Strand during a vulnerable time, seeking help after experiencing traumatic incidents. Unfortunately, my experience there was distressing and left me with new trauma rather than healing. The head nurse exhibited a concerning attitude, being dismissive and unhelpful. When I expressed my concerns about her behavior, I learned that other patients had already filed complaints against her that day. My requests for a room change went ignored despite multiple follow-ups. Medication was seriously mismanaged; my prescriptions were mixed up and not updated as directed by my psychiatrist. When I pointed this out, the nurses responded with irritation, suggesting I "drink what I want." Within days, I experienced severe side effects from the rapid medication changes, including vomiting, diarrhoea and headaches; I could hardly stand, but despite my apparent condition, no staff offered hydration or assistance. During a panic attack, I pressed the nurse call button but waited 20 minutes for help. When I finally approached the front desk, several nurses stood idly while I struggled to breathe. This lack of care is incredibly alarming for anyone seeking support in a mental health facility. Additionally, the environment felt unsafe. A fellow patient discussed drug use in the facility, raising concerns about security and the potential for substance abuse among residents. Inconsistent visitor policies further complicated the experience; while my daughter was denied entry to my room, other patients received visitors without issue, disrupting my rest when I needed it most. One of the few positives was that the food was good and timely, and the art classes provided some enjoyment. However, after working on a meaningful painting, I was unable to retrieve it due to poor communication and oversight. Three nurses were kind and caring, but the unprofessional staff overshadowed their efforts. As a fine artist, the saving grace was the arts/crafts class in which I created a meaningful painting. I was assured it was kept at reception, but when I came to collect it, it was lost without explanation, which deeply saddened me. Overall, Helderberg Clinic Strand was deeply disappointing and concerning. I urge anyone considering this facility for mental health treatment to research other options thoroughly. The "care" provided here does not meet the standards expected for those needing support and healing.

I would like to commend the staff of B ward for their amazing care. I was a patient there for a month and a bit and was treated with nothing but love and dignity. Sr Brown you are amazing, stay as beautiful as you are, inside and out. Dr van Dyk, you saved my life in more ways than one.... Thank you. I also have to mention the dietitian Marike, the Physio's and occupational the******s. Thanx to all of you for your part in putting me back together again. Mary Ann Doman thank you for your daily dedication in my woundcare. May you all be blessed beyond measure 🌹🌹

My wife went in 10 days ago, she has COPD and was not feeling well, battling to breath. After 4 to 5 days being there she said she's feeling a little better. The following day when I got there for visiting she was so drugged up, couldn't speak or open her eyes. I demanded to see what they had given and discovered that they had dosed her with sleeping tablets and morphyn.I just lost it. The following morning I called the doctor ( Dr Smith ) who told me that I caught her just at the wrong time, she was in that state because they gave her insulin for her sugar and it went way to low, reading was 1. Yesterday couldn't get hold of anyone not even the hospitals emergency number did they anwer. So we went to the hospital to see what was going on,. After big argument with security as they wouldn't let us in, when we eventually got to the ward, only to find my wife tied to the bed with a sheet as she wanted to get off to try and use the toilet. According to the staff they did that because they didn't want her to fall. Wife was going crazy so I untied the sheet and explained to the head nurse on duty that she has clostraphobia and has a history of it, cannot be held down or confined to tight spaces. One of the African nurses did not even know what clostraphobia was. According to the 3 stuge nurses that was on duty, they have the right to tie someone down I they think they may injure themself, why not get a Doctor or someone that knows more than these, I would go as far as say incompatant staff members. I will be moving her to another facility

After being involved in a motorbike accident on the highway and miraculously being able to walk away from it I went to HH for a checkup to ensure there are no internal damages. After waiting for over 5 hours I was assisted by Dr Pierre De Waal to whom I've explained I have pain over the entire right side of my body. He then mentioned body pain is normal and asked where the pain was focal. I indicated my foot given that my toenail got lifted, bled and was swollen. Without numbing he bent the nail back and clipped a part and made me walk for X-Rays. There was no other investigation nor was I checked for internal bleeding which might result in death. It has been a few weeks now and pain in my hand arose and escalated which went through a bumper on a bakkie. Due to the doctor not caring about his profession and merely wanted me out of the place, I now sit with a hand I cannot use and do not want to go sit another 5 hours to be discarded. How do you justify a red case sitting for 5 hours in a waiting room after writing off a motorcycle on a highway? This sort of inclination will result in returning patients(if not death) due to nonchalant doctors merely being there to do their hours.

It has been 3 months now and I just get no help, neither any answer at the hospital. My mother has been without her medication for 2 months. Her blood pressure is so high that she can barely breath. THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE. She had an appointment in August, which got canceled they then send a new date, which they canceled the same day. Till now no SMS with a date what so ever. I have been phoning every day and there is just not answer. Today, switchboard finally answered. She put me through the the department that makes the appointments. Again, the phone range until it died. I phoned back and the put me through to the pharmacy, and they cannot assist me. I went back to switchboard and they put me through to Out Patients. Belinda there was very nice, gave me an appointment for 26 October, put me through to the department who makes appointments to see if I can get help quicker, yet again no answer. I even wrote emails to the Government and still not help. So, now my mother has to wait another 2 weeks before she can get medication. What happen until that time? She just dies of a heart attack and HH Hospital just says "o we are so sorry for your loss". How an a hospital not answer there telephones??? What kind of Government hospital is this??? I have never gotten such bad service from any body. My mother is very sick at the moment, but no one seems to care. Her file number is 149127490 - JM Jansen Van Vuuren
