We rented a property through Malan Properties in 2022. The owner later moved to a new rental agency and instructed us to pay rent to the new agency, which we have done every month without fail.
Despite this, Malan Properties continued to invoice us for seven months for rent that was not due to them. Every month my husband emailed them, explaining that we were no longer their tenants and that rent was being paid to the new agency. We have email documentation showing these repeated notifications.
After my husband threatened to report the matter to HelloPeter, they finally issued a corrected statement showing a R0.00 balance. However, during the same period, and without our knowledge, Malan Properties listed us as non-payers/blacklisted us, even though we have never missed a single rental payment.
We only discovered this recently when we started applying for properties in Pretoria for our relocation in January 2026. Several applications were rejected, and one agent finally informed us that we were blacklisted by Malan Properties. This came as a massive shock.
This situation has caused us stress, embarrassment, reputational damage, and the loss of several ideal rental homes. It is unacceptable and completely unfair. Being listed as non-payers when we have proof of consistent rental payments is defamation of character and has had significant real-life consequences for us.
We are not willing to accept a simple apology. Malan Properties must explain how they will fully correct this, remove the wrongful listing immediately, and ensure that our names and credit records are restored to their rightful status.
We expect urgent action and accountability
