I was referred to Jan Jacobs (Nuclad Roofing) for the supply and installation of a PVC picket fence and gate. Around mid November 2023 he requested a deposit in excess of R12,000 which I paid him and he said he would arrange for the picket fence and gate to be made up, that that would take 3-5 days to do and that he would then remove the existing wood picket fence and gate and instal the new one. Despite various promises over a few weeks that the work would be done imminently he has not done anything or communicated for nearly 2 months. He won't take calls, won't respond to emails and won't return the deposirt. Definitely avoid doing business with Jan Jacobs or Nuclad Roofing

Jan Gysbert Jacobs who owns this "business" is a *****. He "hires" foreign workers and then doesn't pay them because he knows they can't go to the police. His addresses are ****, too. He seldom answers his phone and when he does he only talks to prospective customers

******. Takes deposits & progress payments on the very little progress that is made. This man, who I thought was a nice person initially, has turned out to be a *****. Started with my project of enclosing my stoep in September/October last year & I am STILL waiting for him to come & complete the job. He comes up with excuse after excuse why he didn’t or couldn’t pitch. This job was meant to take 3 weeks. He also takes builders off the streets that he doesn’t know (he didn’t even know the one guys name when they were here a few months ago). What’s more is, the guys have come to my house 3 or 4 times looking for Jan because he doesn’t pay them on the day like he is supposed to:. Shame and the guys depend on their daily wage and are waiting weeks and months to be paid (if paid at all). Jan turns out to be a ***** running out of excuses & I wouldn’t go near him with a barge pole to have stuff done around my house in future. I’m just so sick of his lies & feeble excuses. Below are some of his classic excuses for not pitching to complete the job (spanning from Sep 2022 until today 23 May 2023). Just disgusting. Hi Tina, sorry I have been on the road and could not respond. Pls can we do the ceiling on Wednesday then your electrician can come on Thursday. We were delayed somewhat on our current project. Thanks, Jan Hi Tina, we will put the new ceiling in on Friday, I assume the electrician will be there on Thursday? Hi Tina, sorry just got off the road. We were held up this morning with the wet weather and couldn't complete a major roof repair we are doing. We just need one more day ie tomorrow to complete the work. Pls can we do the ceiling on Monday? Thanks Hi Tina, sorry the supplier has just contacted me now to say that they are running behind with their deliveries and they will let me know when they will deliver. Hi Tina, just waiting for my guys. There is a transport problem, they are stuck on the way to work. I will let you know as soon as I hear from them. Hi Tina, my guys are still stuck. Apparently there have been gun shots fired between the taxi drivers so the police has cordoned off the area. I will keep you up to date. Sorry Tina it has been an upside day as I had to go and look for the guys but they are all safe at home now. I will let you know first thing tomorrow morning, still on the road. Hi Tina, we will come through at 3pm this afternoon to fix in the NuTec board, I am going to the sites this morning to see the progress so that I can give you a date we can start. Chat soon. Hi Tina, my apologies. I had to deal with an emergency repair that came up yesterday afternoon all of a sudden. Sorry I should have contacted you. Got back late last night. We will be there between 9am and 10am thismorning to sort the NuTec board for you. Hi Tina, apologies for my late response, I will confirm all today as soon as I am back in the office. Regards, Jan Hi Tina, thanks, I understand. Just going through the projects that will come to completion soon so that I can confirm a date asap. Hi Tina, yes we are aiming to start on Monday. Regards, Jan Hi Tina, apologies for the delay, we will start shortly. I will be in contact to discuss timing. Regards, Jan Good morning Tina, apologies, I have been out of town but I am returning today and will contact you after lunch time once I am back. Kind regards Jan. Morning Tina, I am getting the materials for the skimming work and will then fetch my builder. I will let you know when we are on our way. Thanks Hi Tina, sorry I have been out to Mitchelsplain to look for my builder and labourer, they had transport issues this morning so had little signal where I was. I have now sorted alternative transport for them so that they can be on time. We will start tomorrow then and will be there at 9am. We will look at all the boards to make sure that they are secure. Thanks Hi Tina, sorry I am running late, I am delayed by the brick yard waiting for your bricks to be loaded. I will let you know as soon as I am on my way. Hi Tina, sorry been on the road all morning, I will let you know as soon as I am of f the road. Hi Tina, I will call you tomorrow to discuss. I rather chat with you instead of going backwards and forwards on WhatsApp. I am on my way from being out of town, but I will be back tomorrow morning. Apologies for the delay, I also would like to get this project completed. Hi Tina, I will give you a firm date by this afternoon. Hi Tina, I am at the supplier waiting for the facebricks to arrive that matches yours. They had to order extras in for me. I will fetch my guys as soon as I have the bricks. I will send you a voice message where my builder left me in the lurch for Friday where I have organized him to be available. Unfortunately Monday ie today did not suit me as I have lost my bakkie over the weekend and I am making arrangements for alternative transport. Showing our intentions to carry on with the work. So pls show this to the police as well. So I have a commitment from my builder as well to be available to finish the work. No I have not the other builder is and was not available. But Bothwell has worked at your house before so I prefer him to be there in any event. He is my main builder. I AM DRIVING AND WILL RESPOND AS SOON AS I HAVE STOPPED!

DO not use this man (Jan Jacobs). He did a job for me 22rd and 23rd of December, 2022. Apparently his 'team' likes working over the festive period because their families are in Zim and they like to earn a bit of extra cash. The long story short. The poor labourer (who turned out to be a casual he picked up along Rosmead avenue) was not paid a single cent for his two full days of work. He came up with many excuses. Nevermind that he charges a 75% deposit (asked for immediate transfer nogal) to cover his liability. The worker pitched up at my door on the 24th, and again on the 25th. He was supposedly going to meet Jan on the corner to get paid. On the 24th, I gave the worker Jan's cell phone number. On the 25th, (Christmas!!!) the worker came again. This time I phoned Jan and gave him the opportunity to come to my house and pay the worker. His excuse? He was rushed to the hospital with chest pains 23rd of December and was kept there without a phone. And, even though he is now back home, he cannot come to pay the worker, because he is now in debt from the hospital. How can someone do this!? If he had paid his casual worker at the end of each day, he would not be able to say that he used the money for the hospital. So even if it is true (which I doubt since reading other reviews here), it is absolutely disgusting to not pay a casual worker before they leave for the day. So, I ended up paying the worker R700 out of pocket (he was owed R900 from his 'employer'), so that he could go join his friends / family doing something nice for Christmas. He said while all his friends are going to the beach and making food, he had two days of stress over not being paid. He also would have had another job on the 24th with someone else, had he not waited on the corner near my house for 6 hours for this man to come pay him. During the 2 days of work around my house, I also got Jan to quote on a afdak and pergola. He really gunned for me to go ahead, saying he would be able to do it over new years. He asked me often if I am going ahead, almost over the top. Imagine if I had paid him the 75% deposit (which is a hefty amount), just to be left in the lurch. Never mind that any af-dak that has a roof on it and gutters etc, needs to be council approved. That he did not even mention or suggest. I'm sticking to my regular contractor who is honest, reliable, and has mutual respect with his team and casuals.

Jan Jacobs of Nuclad Roofing is a repeat conman. He has been reported him to SAPS and there is currently a case of theft by conversion against him. He disappeared with a large deposit without completing the bulk of the work we hired him for and without ordering the materials we paid him for. He made many excuses to explain the delays when it’s clearly something he has done many times and he had no intention of completing the job. After speaking to a neighbour, he also ran off with their deposit. We had no reason to suspect him as he had previously completed a small job for us and others in the area and had started work on painting, sanding and other smaller tasks. Do not use him for anything.
