09 Mar 2026, 07:00Good morning Brian,
Thank you for your feedback and for raising concerns about responsible gambling. We take this topic very seriously and appreciate the opportunity to clarify the current situation.
At present, the only account restriction formally regulated by provincial gambling boards in South Africa is official self-exclusion. Unfortunately, features such as timeouts, deposit limits, or cool-off periods are not currently required or regulated under the existing provincial framework.
That said, we want to be transparent: we agree that the current regulations do not go far enough. As an operator, we support the expansion of responsible gambling regulations to include the types of controls you mentioned, such as deposit limits and cooling-off mechanisms. We believe these tools can play an important role in helping players manage their gambling responsibly.
While we would like to be an industry pace setter in this area, we also believe that meaningful and consistent progress requires clear regulatory standards applied across the entire industry. For this reason, we support and welcome the development of broader regulations that would formally introduce and standardize these protections for all licensed operators.
In the meantime, players who feel they need stronger intervention can make use of the official self-exclusion process through the relevant provincial gambling board, which is the legally recognized mechanism currently available.
We appreciate you taking the time to highlight this issue and contribute to the discussion around improving responsible gambling protections in South Africa.
Sincerely
Play.co.za 💜
Best regards,
