I experienced problems with my UPS and called the UPS service centre closest to my home. This happened to be Powerman. I explained that I had not purchased my UPS at Powerman and was looking to repair my unit. The persona that I spoke to explained that they were able to service and repair non Powerman units and suggested that I bring the unit in. I did. Later, I received a call from Powerman to advise me that the unit was a competitors unit and that this competitor does not sell the spares for their units to them. He advised that I could collect my unit from them as they could not fix it. I then received another call from them advising me that were able to sell me one of their units. I refused their offer and went to their Honeydew premises. I was then advised that I would have to pay an "assessment" fee to them before they would release my unit to me. I asked why they did not tell me from the onset that they are unable to source parts for my unit. I was advised to speak to the manager, Tshwerelo, who agreed with me that the practice was unethical but nevertheless had to charge me the said fees. Both of his colleagues who overheard the conversation apologised and appeared embarrassed by this practise. It appress that Powerman encourages the public to bring their units in to be fixed even when they are aware that they are unable to fix it and use the opportunity to charge an "assessment fee" and to market their own units . Unethical and shameful behaviour that even their staff are embarrassed about!
