Excellent service from Johannesburg to Western Cape. On time. Professional team. Constant communication.

My 2 month old Dell Latitude E7470 developed screen problems. Initially the screen would not reactivate on recovery from sleep mode, then it developed to the screen not always working when the computer was switched on. The problem deteriorated further to the computer 'black screening' while I'm working on it.

Dell Technical Support number is on a Johannesburg number but you get put through to an office in India. They take you through a series of tests in an attempt to either resolve or isolate the problem. The tests may range from BIOS updates through to taking the back off the computer and expecting you to fiddle with electronic components in the guts of the machine that you may not be technically competent to do. It may get to the point where they expect your to buy equipment (special cables in my case) to perform further tests. And they appear not to be concerned that this takes up the customers time or that it may take weeks (so far 2 weeks in my case) to resolve.

It turns out that unless you have a 'Pro Support' warranty, all standard Dell three year warranties in South Africa are handled by Dell India, and they told me they cannot send a competent technician to look at the computer until they had isolated the problem. So they were prepared to continue asking me to run tests on a deteriorating computer no matter what my time or equipment costs would be. I complained about this, and demanded either a replacement computer or to see a competent technician. Dell India stopped communicating with me.

I run a small consulting engineering business and have used Dell computers for many years. They are expensive but normally reliable machines. However, it seems that when they go wrong the backup support is extremely poor. A disfunctional computer means downtime, delays and missed deadlines, all with financial consequences. But the extra cost of Dell computers and reputation of reliability is not worth it if one of the units fails..
