I have been having a spike in my bill since I upgraded in November last year. I then started investigating and found “content service charges” on my bill. (This has been going on since Jan 2018) This was a shock since I clearly asked the person assisting me that I want all extra costs and charges on my bill canceled. He then assured me my bill will be under R1000. I was never informed about content services. Then i started reading up on this issue and found that you could be subscribed by this content services even if you decline or exit these pop up adds. Further I found that about 4 years ago the double opt-in law was instated and yet still WASPA can bypass this and you will be subscribed to unwanted content without your knowledge. How is that legal? How does my network provider protect me from this scam. Correct me if I’m wrong but Cell C states it is my responsibility when I have double opt-in but in this case I am not even aware or I HAVE NOT USED THIS SIM SINCE NOV! So please explain to me how the content services went up? Are they then just going around picking random numbers and charging them? If they can bypass the double opt why not this too? So clearly I did NOT double opt-in for any okay to subscribe to content services. So Cell C who is responsible for allowing these billings? Ownup!!
So I was only recently able to view my Cell C invoices. My bill has been spiking after my upgrade in Nov and I didn’t understand why since I am not using this sim at all. (I’m traveling) I then strated researching what is up with the extra R170 “content services” charge on my bill. I read about WASPA and was utterly shocked to find that even if you decline or exit adds you can be subscribed to this unwanted content. Which I have never benefit from or know about. Then i read the double opt-in rule and that some of these content providers still bypass it. So there is no way to protect yourself from these unwanted charges. I’m extremely unhappy and want to open a case with WASPA to get my money back. How can you charge a consumer without their concent or a direct invoice of payment or some proof of this content services. I feel this should be highly illegal and the network providers should protect their customers from this scam!
