My late husband passed away in 1996 and he was a registered member of SAMRO. On the 30th of April 2025 I went to SAMRO offices to claim for my late husband's royalties. I was told that I will receive royalties for 50 years, which in that 50 years they will reimburse me royalties for 29 years because I haven't claimed for the past 29 years. They also told me that they will pay me R30,000 for the funeral policy of my late husband because it wasn't claimed. They then told me that the money will reflect after 40 working days. On the 31st of July I went back to their offices and they told me that the lady that helped me on the 30th of April made a mistake with my claim. They also told me that they are banking with ABSA so the money will take time to reflect on my account because I'm using a different bank. They said the money will reflect on the 1st of August or on the 4th of August. When I ask them how much will I receive they told me they are not allowed to disclose that. I never received the payment and I decided to give them a call on the 6th of August. They told me to go and check at the bank because they believe that the problem is with my bank. I went to the bank and the bank consultant told me that there is no problem with my account. The bank consultant gave them a call and spoke to the manager of SAMRO named Glory who then assured me that the money is released and it will reflect I must give them time. I then received a payment of R5000 which is an insult for 29 years. They are now refusing to pay me royalties for the past 28 years.

I app**** to become a member at SAMRO and have paid my application fee. I tried logging in but my credentials did not work. I tried emailing them over the last few weeks, but to no avail. I phoned them and was not helped at all. They only said that they'll send me an email and I'll have to follow the steps. That email never came. I am extremely unhappy with SAMRO, because of this. I am a student with a very tight budget, so paying the application fee was already difficult for me even though it's just R100.

I am the executor of my father's estate and made an application to be the beneficiary of his royalties. It took months just to process that application application alone. Then after acceptance I was informed they are undergoing system changes and payouts would take 6-8 weeks. It has been a further 6 months and still no payments. They dont reply to emails or phone calls. They close tickets without resolving. SAMRO IS *****!

I made a payment to SAMRO account by mistake. I was trying to pay for my RISA account but mistakenly went to SAMRO. Since May they have been making promises to refund me back. It's September now and there is still nothing from them. Their customer service is now even replying to my emails anymore.

I am the Administrator of my late Mother's Estate and are trying to obtained Royalty Payments due for registered classical music composed by my late brother The Composer of Classical Music, Pieter Smit. Although SAMRO confirmed last year that an amount of R 18 000 is due and payable they have failed to make any payment and did not keep the commitment to make payment during the first week of June 2024. They have now confirmed this morning that they are not in a position to make payment, basically , committing an act of insolvency, in my opinion. Sad that the Royalties earned by my late brother will now go waste by another so called state utility. It would be in the interest of the registered artists to rather apply for the liquidation now of the utility and start a fresh with trained and qualified serious management.

I am all for fair usage policy and I understand the concept BUT my establishment is a Self catering venue, this means: I do not supply music the DJ my client has hired for their event supplies the music and gets paid for that service. If I play music it is ambiance background music. SAMRO you want to charge me R8 000 in 2023 for a licence?????????? my Liquor license is R2 500 per year for my venue - I feel this is 100% fair I make the money for the service that I provide. HOW???? 2022 my charge was R391.23 for the exact same establishment? If and when an artist Wishes to play at my establishment, I charge them 20% of their ticket sales for VENUE HIRE!!! They make the money! HOW does this all make sense? You want to take legal action because you say it is law for me to have this license - my question.... is it LAW that ALL musicians must be members of SAMRO? this is a real question I don't know? or is it a choice? If it is a choice - please provide me with an updated list of all artists that is your members so that I can put in my documentation that their music is not allowed to be played in my establishment. I the client wishes to play their music they must apply for a temporary or events lisence. My venue only opened it's doors when covid ended we are trying to find our feet! You are cutting off our feet from under us! I am more than willing to pay the R400 license fee BUT not R8 000.
