I recently visited one of Franschhoek’s most iconic and historic wine estates with international guests, and unfortunately, the experience was deeply disappointing. From the moment we arrived, we struggled to get clear information from the staff. The grounds appeared neglected, the estate looked tired and run-down, and the homestead was closed. Lunch was bland and overcooked, leaving both myself and my guests underwhelmed. I could see their disappointment, which was disheartening given the estate’s reputation.
In an effort to make up for the experience, I took my guests to Vergelegen Wine Farm the following day—and the contrast was remarkable. The gardens were immaculate, the restaurant, although busy, welcomed and accommodated us, and the meal, including dessert, was outstanding. The wine tasting centre was tastefully decorated, the staff knowledgeable and attentive, and the overall experience was exceptional.
I felt genuinely proud to showcase Vergelegen to my guests. Thank you to Vergelegen Stables Restaurant and team—you truly make us proud, and I will confidently choose you again whenever I want to make a lasting impression in Cape Town.
