I am writing to express my deep disappointment and concern regarding my recent interaction with Sandi Nel, the portfolio manager at Steer & Co.
Upon receiving a substantial rental increase of nearly 20%, I promptly reached out to Steer to seek clarification, as such a significant raise seemed unjustified. Regrettably, the response I received from Ms. Nel was not only ill-mannered but also lacked the professionalism and empathy one would expect in such circumstances.
In my attempt to negotiate the increase, a process that has typically been collaborative and amicable in past interactions with management agents, Ms. Nel informed me that Steer & Co is mandated to act solely on behalf of the owner. Despite providing valid comparables and proposing a reasonable 10% increase, Ms. Nel asserted that the owner was comfortable with the proposed increases and would not consider any reductions.
I find it disconcerting that, despite my unit lacking basic furnishings such as a stove or curtain rods, the assessment appears to be inaccurate. What exacerbates the situation is that my proposal was not even taken back to the owner for consideration.
In stark contrast to my experience, my own dealings in high-end rentals involve a maximum 10% increase this year, with a genuine openness to valid negotiations with tenants.
Ms. Nel's response, suggesting I scout the market for better options, was both dismissive and unsympathetic. This stands in stark contrast to the professional and respectful approach I have encountered elsewhere in the industry.
Given my firsthand experience, I feel compelled to caution prospective tenants considering Steer & Co and owners seeking management services. The conduct displayed by Ms. Nel is not representative of the level of professionalism and consideration one would expect in this fiercely competitive industry.
Shame on you Steer and co for allowing an employee to speak and treat anyone this way. When this was brought to your attention NO ACTION WAS TAKEN.
Disgusting !
