Economy Car Rentals
Based on recent customer reviews, Economy Car Rentals is drawing significant criticism from South African customers who describe the booking experience as misleading and the after-sales support as unresponsive. A recurring theme is frustration over hidden terms, unexpected charges at vehicle collection, and difficulty reaching the company once issues arise. Customers consistently mention concerns about the third-party booking model trading through other rental brands, deposit disputes, and unresolved damage claims. A smaller positive thread acknowledges the portal as easy to use and pricing as reasonable when bookings proceed without complications.

I used the services of Economy Car Rentals who put me in touch with BLUU Car Rentals when I hired a car from them at Cape Town International Airport from 1 to 3 April 2026. The car was clean and pleasant to drive. The booking, pick up and return procedures of the vehicle were smooth and efficient. I shall definitely utilize or at least consider using the services of Economy Car rentals again when I need to hire a vehicle in the future. Pieter de Klerk

Economy Car Rentals advertised “unlimited kilometres” with a small asterisk, but the asterisk only led to terms and conditions that were only provided on their website and not provided on the voucher. Only after booking, did we discover that “unlimited kilometres” only applies to rentals longer than four days. This is extremely misleading. We ended up overpaying for a van we would never have rented in the first place if this condition had been properly disclosed upfront. Overall, we found their practices deceptive, and when we tried to resolve the issue, their service and handling of our case was very poor. I would not recommend this company.

I am so frustrated and didn't know I wouldn't get the car and as well as two amounts deducted from my credit card. I booked a car to attend a funeral and couldn't get it. I am South Afican but I was asked to provide US drivers license. I'm still so frustrated 😠.

We have used EconomyCarRentals before and noted no major issues. We always opted for the damage excess coverage. However, this time we actually needed to lodge a damage claim and after more than a month of constant follow-ups have received no indication of if/when the claim will be settled. They keep on blaming their ‘provider’ for the delays, but do not seem to be interested in closing the matter and assisting a loyal client of many years. I am very dissatisfied and will never use this company again.

If I could rate my experience as zero I would, but there is only the option to start at 1. I booked a vehicle for someone else, so I didn't receive the booking voucher in my email. The booking confirmation on the website stated that I needed to pay R2300 to confirm the booking and that there would be R2712 payable at the desk. When she arrived to collect the vehicle, she was presented with a R7000 bill. She did not have the money on her, and the car hire consultant would not allow me to make an EFT to them, so I asked them to cancel the booking. I contacted Economy Car Rentals and was told that even though I had taken out cancellation insurance, I was not eligible for a refund because the booking had already commenced an hour prior. So I have paid R2300 and received absolutely no service. Making money out of people due to technicalities on a booking is no way to do business.

The initial fee you pay upon booking is a booking fee which is not deducted from the actual rental in my case R833.11. They are a third party that pass your booking on to the actual car rental business. Mine went through First Car Rental. I feel this bit of information should be clearly stipulated. They obviously get cheaper rates but with this booking fee your rental will probably work out the same if you went directly with the rental company.
