Karl Bremer Hospital
Based on recent customer reviews, Karl Bremer Hospital receives overwhelmingly negative feedback centred on rude and dismissive nursing staff, particularly during night shifts. Patients report extreme wait times of up to 24 hours or more in emergency and trauma units, often without food, water, or bedding. Maternity experiences are described as traumatic, with lack of consent and rough treatment. Communication failures between shifts and unanswered phones leave families unable to reach loved ones. A few reviewers praise the hospice facility and individual staff members, but the majority describe a facility in crisis with deeply inadequate patient care and dignity.

My mom passed away on 27 June 2027, she had the most horrible experiences and treatments especially on the 5th floor night shift staff, so much so she begged us to take her home and threatened to take pills so that she can just go to a better place than this hospital. I only have the guts to speak about it now as I was to heart broken because of her passing away.

My mother was brought in in 2nd May 2024, she had COPD & was allergic to Penicillin. She passed away on 5th of May 2024, due to "natural causes" which is bullsh*t. The doctors gave her antibiotics without knowing what was wrong with her. They gave no clear information as to why she passed but I could never find rest as I have no answers till this day. PATHETIC!!! Ever since I have insomnia, and my mind wanders due to questions not being answered.

For all the Hype of how well run our public hospitals are in the Western Cape my experience at Karl Bremmer was woefully inadequate!!!! The main reception is chaotic ,no designated area just for enquiries .Staff sitting together (i assume training) laughing and chatting whilst the queues snake out the door , staff who are dismissive ,rude and lack any empathy. The manager of the reception area is very unprofessional and can clearly not manage a hospital reception area.Patients waiting are not considered to be human beings but rather an irritation and nuisance. I was admitted for surgery on the 20th Jan. Was told to arrive at 11 am ,only to be told I was too early and waited 9 hours for a bed ONLY to be told by Sister Faro in ward 2b that its chaos everyday!!! Once admitted I was in a ward where 3 Patients were on nappies and catheter. They were told to change their own catheter and nappies as well as bath themselves in the bed.No privacy as the curtains could not close .An elderly man 95 yrs old who was blind in one eye and partially deaf had his food just put down on his bedside cabinet ,after requesting numerous times if a nurse could help feed him , this patient was encouraged to feed himself .After challenging the nurses they fed him the cold food.Numerous requests for water were ignored. Two Patients lay in their soiled nappies for hours and the stench was disgusting. One nurse complaining that she could not adjust a Patients bed as she was 60 years old!!! The window next to my bed had years of dirt layered on it ,rusted and they could not close ,was held together with wire ! The nursing staff would do their rounds only to check vitals ie blood pressure, sugar levels .One of the nurses when doing an intake questionnaire didn't even know what an antidepressant was ! No toilet seats in the toilets, no soap , no towels .Dry urine on the floor at the toilet. After my surgery I was discharged the next day at 9am as they needed the bed .I was in alot of pain they instructed me to wait until 3pm for a discharge letter in the waiting room where they have metal chairs .I was not given ANY post operation instructions on how to manage my dressings or wounds .I had security guards at the hospital asking me for money so they could buy lunch ! UNLESS this hospital does not embark on a training with nurses on what acceptable nursing practices are expected and the culture of care , humanity and empathy they should be held to higher standards .It appears that management is NON EXISTENT or they all have the same mentality that Patients are a burden and should be grateful for the morsels of care the patient recieves at the mercy of Nurses and Sisters who need to re consider their profession. For the first two days of my admittance I had to assist the patients in my ward due to the dismissive attitudes of the staff. Sister Faro and her counterpart should be disciplined and re trained .I received my diagnosis in February 2025 I was to get put on the list for an operation in June at the out patient the reception there is disgraceful they never booked my surgery.I had to return, which meant a hour wait to get your file, then vitals taken in an open room with other patients where they get to hear all your personal information where is the patient confidentiality!! Only to wait another 4 hours to see a doctor, whom skims over your file ultimately missing key elements and forming a comprehensive diagnosis .I have lived abroad using government hospital facilities and I can confidently say the medical nursing department is in crisis due to cultural understanding of patient care and accountability or lack of oversight. Im afraid to say the private medical hospitals are not to dissimilar in patient care like in the public hospitals. As a patient all one wants is to be treated with dignity ,empathy and respect.Unfortunately Karl Bremmer gets a big 0 for patient care .

Disappointed! Doctors can't even calm my daughter down, she must be on oxygen, a drip if needed and can't even put in a needle correctly that me and my husband stepped in after 7 attempts and bruising her arms and hands. The staff in the children's ward is so rude especially the night shift doctors and nurses. Giving my daughter medicine at the wrong time. They don't communicate anything only treat you like you weren't supposed to be there and spoiling their day. They don't communicate with the day staff at all, because the day shift say one thing and the night shift say another. They don't communicate with the doctors as well. My doctor whom helped my daughter say we are getting discharge and they say they don't know anything of it. Why would the doctor and day shift say my daughter is in a safe condition to go home, but the night shift want to keep my daughter. With all this unnecessary, unfair, traumatic experience my daughter has to go though and we as parents only wanting the best for our children are being treated as if we are making their work difficult for needing medical support. Never going back. I would rather sell my car to support my children and getting them the humane, caring and understanding team or medical support than to ever going back.

This is the worse hospital ever, my mom arrived here diagnosed with Breast cancer in September, she did her biopsy and mammogram. when it was time to get her results in October, they told her they can't locate her biopsy results she has to do the biopsy again and wait another 3 weeks for her results which she received in November. her cancer now has spread to her bones and liver. on top of that she's in pain since but only started her treatment in November. the doctor took her folder and said they will discuss her way forward whether they will operate her or she will start a Chemo etc and promised to call me back for the end feedback but I haven't received ant call still. instead, they gave a follow-up date for next year. they ****** her all her survival chances. they have no write to write off a person. Even if your cancer is metastic they are available treatment options still but they shut her off. Im very angry now her body is static to fail . watching your parent go through such. why couldn't they send her to another hospitals instead of delaying things.

- I arrived in full blown labour already been 30 hours with no progress so I needed hospital assistance (was planning home birth). -the night nurses got MAD that I came there at in inconvenient time for them (they looked like they were gonna change shifts) - I had to find my way to the correct room to give birth in because the nurses were so rude and unclear -a nurse told me to "get on" and pointed to the bed next to another labouring mommy. -i got myself on and struggled only for her to say impatiently "huh uh take clothes off put on gown". There was no gown there? So I stood waiting and she game back with an XL gown (I'm an xs) and I tried getting it on but it was literally slipping off (goodbye, dignity). - climbed on and was left alone to labour and it was PAINful. The nurse said I must stop and be quiet :| -my partner then told the nurse about my original birth plan (very basic, just wanted it to be as uninterrupted as possible) she gave such ATTITUDE telling us "don't tell my how to do my job". Then the nurses laughed together and spoke in their language. -a new nurse came and randomly told me to turn on my side and gave me an injection in my thigh. "What's that??" I asked. She said nothing. (Later found out it was pethadine). I did not consent to any of this. That made me completely drowsy but still felt all the pain and torture. - I felt big urge to push suddenly and the nurse yelled at me and told me to stop. Obviously I couldn't and that point I didn't give a hoot what they said. She yelled to me "your baby is gonna die if you push". What utter bs!! I pushed and suddenly the vaccum suction machine is being shoved in!! ****tle did I know they managed to cut me before they did that, without my knowledge). -baby was perfectly fine. They cut the cord immediately (which was stated to NOT do in my birth plan.) -i laid my baby on me and had skin to skin at least. -another random nurse comes and tugs on the cord to get the placenta out. I'm freaking out because, what the hell? The nurse goes silent and calls for help. She caused me to haemorrhage. I had to have something put into the IV drip to help stop that. -then comes a nurse to stitch me up. THE PAIN. The immense pain. The bodily torture. Zero compassion. I felt every last stitch. They botched it as well. Still dealing with the consequences all these years later. -i had to get up by myself and take my bags + newborn and nearly blacked out so they got a wheelchair for me. The nurse carelessly sped down the hall with me and told me to get onto the bed. -i had to stay overnight because the doctor wasn't there to discharge anyone. -they forced me to sit in the bathtub with salt water. BUT there was no plug and no warm water. When I asked what to do she said put toilet paper for the plug. I just closed the door and pretended to do all that. The toilet had someone else's blood drops on. -i went back to my room and the nurse told me I **** and didn't sit in the tub. I said I did. She tried belittling me but eventually left it. -i didn't sleep all night. I wasn't offered food or water. My baby didn't get a cot so she slept next to me under my arm on the bed. The light on the wall was blinding. The noise of the nurses yapping deafening. Another mommy postpartum was losing her mind and walked up and down the passage with milk dripping down her body. The nurses just laughed at her and watched. -next morning food was so gross I didn't touch: plain, stale brown bread and really brown banana. -had to sit more than 4 hours in a crowded room waiting for a doctor to show up to discharge us all. It was torture. Every mom's face in that room looked traumatized. -im glad me and baby had no health complications because staying there would've made it so much worse.
