The animals here are lovely; it’s the humans that need temperament assessments. The journey into this Disney fever dream began with ****chka, who was so stressed on our first call that I actually had to talk her through a guided breathing exercise. I didn't realize that adopting a kitten came with a side hustle as a counsellor. The kitten we were interested in is a "Siamese cross" & when they called again to confirm our application' success we find out the adoption fee jumped from the standard R1000 to R2000 "because it’s a Siamese cross". Yes, one whole thousand Madiba' more! Again, I didn't know we were at a high-end boutique cattery, but hey, it’s for the animals, right? We agree! & drive 40 minutes to their location. Stage right - Michelle The Manager (allegedly) & an unknown & unnamed, witchy looking woman who clearly graduated from the Hogwarts School Of Miserable Mismanagement. Michelle is an entire psychological TED Talk & boy does it show - she is impatient, rude, condescending and possess the people skills of a cactus. The witchy looking woman did nothing other than decided to participate in conversation (which she was not a part of, mind you) with a snarky, - “And how exactly were you planning to take a kitten home without a carrier?” Although she made a good point & I was willing to purchase one there - my patience had all but evaporated from the cauldron she was hiding in the back & I Informed her that I would be using my **** as the transport vessel of choice. After which we left. Never to dwell again, well besides me writing this whole piece for those who see it to enjoy & because I'm petty & you made my partner cry. Anyway, - they were chronically understaffed and it showed. The manager's attitude is a toxic trickle-down that has left the staff looking despondent and the customers looking for a cage of their own to hide in. Great animals, but the management needs an exorcism & a shot of holy water.

We previously adopted two wonderful dogs from other shelters, but our experience with Kitty and Puppy Haven, where we adopted our third puppy, Albert, has been exceptional. While our experiences with other shelters were positive, Kitty and Puppy Haven is by far the best-managed shelter we have worked with. The animals are in excellent condition when made available for adoption, and their living arrangements are of a very high standard. Their thorough background and compatibility checks demonstrate that the long-term wellbeing of the animals is their top priority. I can only speak highly of them.

I have followed this rescue for quite some time now and according to Facebook they struggle to find adopters. My family worked with Cape Dachshund Rescue and the experience was amazing, especially the woman assisting us. So I phoned to see how the process works at Kitty and Puppy Haven. Yes Michelle might be trying to do her best. But there's a massive difference between ethical and reasonable and just following a made up check list. The customer experience was terrible from my initial WhatsApp message up until my phone call. Listen I understand everyone wants the best for the dog getting adopted. But then there are ********* questions and standards. When I said I live in a complex I was told I cannot get the dog because it will bark. Which dog doesn't bark?! How else do they express themselves? So I cannot adopt the dog and provide a loving home because a neighbor might complain?! My complex is full title and there are numerous court decisions saying that no body corporate may tell you to get rid of a dog. Also, I work close to my home and frequently go home to feed and check on my dog. My husband is at home every second day. But still this isn't enough to adopt. We live in a world where it's not possible for someone to be at home full-time, especially if you want to provide your dogs with the best life. But still my pup that I have is the happiest and most playful baby. So Michelle, you don't need to be an expert on a dog breed to provide them with a beautiful life. You need a good heart. Try looking for that in people. Focus on smaller things, like with a dachshund, they need enough stimulation activities and focus on their back health. If someone can provide them with love, excellent healthcare, food and a safe home, why are you stopping adoption? I will be supporting Wollies, Cape Dachshund and Dachshund Rescue SA from now on. These people are providing excellent and reasonable home checks for their babies.

Rudest people, feel sorry for the animals in their care. Hide behind their processes but people are rude!

Saw an ad for adoption of a beautiful pup named buttercup from this shelter on Facebook, we phoned to book an appointment to come see her, where we were asked about what pets we already have, which we have two cats, and one adult female German shepherd (her name is Java), only to be abruptly told that we cannot adopt Buttercup, because Java is a female adult, in what world does this make sense ? The lady on the phone said that it is because when buttercup and Java will fight over territory. We’ve had a situation at home where an injured bird was in our garden and Java was protecting the bird and herding the cats away to keep the bird safe, she wouldn’t hurt a fly. Not to mention our cats are both adult cats who just two months ago joined the family, Java hasn’t had any sort of aggression over them whatsoever since they’ve been here and she didn’t know cats before and wasn’t raised around them, she is a complete sweetheart, but this “shelter” wasn’t in the slightest concerned about finding out more about Java and our circumstances to see if Buttercup would be a good fit for our home. I would have paid very much above the “adoption fee”, even 10x the adoption fee if it meant supporting a good respectable organisation, but the way that we were treated does not sit right with me. And then as a animal shelter you want to post how infuriated you are when a puppy hasn’t had any offers for adoption in weeks. Really in what world can you not adopt a female pup because you already have a female adult dog in your family. I can understand that you might have adoption rules, but they shouldn’t be that ridiculous, and at least try to accommodate and hear people out, organise a home visit, offer to allow the doggies to meet and see how they interact. And looking at the other reviews of this shelter it makes me sad, rather call yourself a pet shop if you’re in it for the money, and being kind to the people who are actually willing to come to a shelter to adopt fluffy family members is the least you can do.

Adopted the most adorable little baby from Kitty and Puppy Haven. The adoption process was quick and easy. Thank you to Michelle for assisting us and taking the time to answer all the questions we had about our new baby. The shop is also great- fully stocked and lots of variety !

First of all STOP leaving remarks about how rude and upsetting Michelle is. Michelle is not a here for you!! She is here for the dogs and they are the most important. , She is a dedicated and unselfish dog rescuer. She is there for the dogs! Not you! Not that its has happened but I would gladly have her be rude to me because she is MY HERO. She and her team works VERY hard and long and tiring hours to rescue dogs from terrible conditions! 1. Were they perhaps brisk on the phone - I had no problem with that. When I was there this team were going from one appointment to the other, phones really ringing constantly. These people works their butts off! They don’t have time for letting you get that warm and fuzzy feeling! 2. I have adopted two dogs from them and it has only been a positive experience. There dogs are very well looked after! 3. Second time I tried to adopt they said they don’t allow adoptions with two females dogs in the house and you know what!? I immediately accepted it because guess what - they are not doing YOU a favor, they are the custodians of these animals and I respect that. They decide NOT you!! They would rather have the dog stay safe in their kennel than possibly be not safe and be returned adding more stress to the dog! 4. If you get there and the dog you were looking for were adopted even if you drove 6000 kms, if you really are are an animal person you would be celebrating the fact that a dog got a home. Why not look if there is another doggie that would suit your home?????? They work on a first come first serve basis and they make that clear. These guys are MY HEROES!
