I had a very disappointing experience @ News Cafe Boksburg a week ago. My daughter and I went to enjoy the evening there and by the end of it the waiter presented us with the bill that just did not seem like the correct amount. As I had been drinking and it was late, I didnt want to argue so I paid the bill and left. The next morning I noticed that the amount that went off my account was an astronomical amount, much more than the bill the waiter brought me the night b4 which I was already suspicious about. I went back to News Cafe the next day and spoke to Sandi. I explained to him that the amount on our bill just did not seem right for 2 ppl and showed him the amount that went off my account. I told him that I just wanted to make sure that we got the correct bill and there wasn’t a mix up with the bills. He then brought me a copy of the bill for our table and it was way less than the bill the waiter presented me with the nyt b4. Everything we ate and drank that night was clear on that bill. Even the drinks that I bought for my friend who came to pick us up that night was displayed on the bill. The bill that Sandi showed me, the bill the we were given by the waiter and the amount that went off my acc were 3 different amounts. He also agreed with me that the amount that went off my acc seemed excessive for 2 people. The bill that the waiter gave us that night was nowhere to be found according to Sandi yet his books balanced perfectly for that nyt. Sandi asked me to give him a day or 2 to investigate and said he will call me. He never did. I called him at the end of the week and he started telling me abt the service fee that News Cafe adds to the bills that are over R800. It still didnt explain why such a huge amount went off my acc so i told him I will come in to see him the next day. When I got there, the waiter that served us that night was there and I explained to him my concern about the different amounts. He started giving me all sorts of versions and stories which didnt make any sense to me. He kept having his say and didnt give me much of a hearing. Sounded like he knew exactly how to justify himself so he blamed it on me being drunk and not remembering me tipping him such a huge amount. He didnt even know how much the bill was for that he brought me the nyt before and kept guessing amounts. When I told him what the the total bill wud have been for after the service fee was added, he then built his story on that amount.I told him that I always tip the waiters, and always try to do so in cash, but I know for a fact I wud not have authorised him to take a whole R1000 tip off my bank acc when I had enough cash that nyt with me to pay his tip. All he kept harping on is that I was drunk and didn’t remember. I realised that it was a battle that I was never going to win bcos I had been drinking that nyt. So I told him to forget abt it and I left. I ended up spending a huge amount of money that nyt, and I do believe that the waiter took full advantage of the fact that I was drinking and helped himself to a large tip. Also if there was a service fee charged to my bill, which I didnt know about at that point, I was not obligated to give the waiter a tip. Apparently, according to Sandi, the service fee that News Cafe adds to your bill is mentioned @ the back of the menu. Bcos everyone reads the back of the menu! Even if the service fee was added to the bill that Sandi showed me, it still wudnt have amounted to the bill the waiter gave me that nyt. I will never go back to News Cafe Boksburg again bcos I am convinced that the waiter conned me that night. If management does not watch that guy, they are going to lose customers bcos of this. Where his tip shudv been abt R270 according to the actual bill for that night that Sandi showed me, that guy insisted that I authorised him to help himself to a R1000 tip from my bank acc. I am convinced that he has done this b4 judging by how well he came to his defence and kept blaming it on me being drunk. The perfect ammunition right, bcos thats what ppl do @ News cafe, they drink! He told me that I over tipped and then regretted it the next day. That was most certainly not the case. I am certainly not a fan of giving away my hard earned money for nothing! But I do believe in tipping the 10% of my bill. News Cafe Boksburg has lost me as a customer which is such a pity as we had a really great time that night. The vibe was awesome and we were safe for the duration we were there. So very unfair how ppl that are willing to spend money in places like these and have a good time still get exploited by greedy waiters. A rather frustrating and disappointing experience!
