I have seen several reviews here complaining about the cost of the service at Onderstepoort. I was there yesterday with my Boston Terrier with heart failure. This was my first visit to the cat and dog clinic. I was very impressed by the professionalism of the students and the staff. They confirmed that my current vet and specialist was doing everything that can be done for my Boston at the moment. After seeing so many negative reviews regarding the cost of their services, I was pleasantly surprised. They charged me about 20% of my normal specialist vet bill. The quote they gave me for any further tests I may want done was also about 20% of what I was charged for a similar stay for my dog in January at a vet hospital. This is an academic hospital with no government support. Considering this, I think they are extremely reasonable in their costs. I would like to encourage people to use them. The facility is old but well kept, and there is nothing wrong with their knowledge. Yes, reception is manned by students and your initial consultation is with a final year student who then consults a qualified vet. This is how the students learn. All the students I encountered yesterday were friendly young professionals

My cat had to have a full-mouth extraction. This operation can only be done at Onderstepoort because the ordinary suburban vets do not have all the equipment that is very expensive. The gave superb, very professional service and looked after our cat very well. I can recommend them unreservedly.

Our Border collie pup , was injured while trying to squeeze through our palisade fence, leaving an open wound that needed stitching, we decided to go to Onderstepoort they informed us that we were there after hours, and it would be R1'000 admission fee. The gent at reception said he would ask the vet on duty if she would have a look at her. He returned shortly and let us know the vet would charge in the region if R4'000 to R5'000 to assist. We informed the gent at reception that it was very expensive and we would go elsewhere. After which we were told to sign a refusal of treatment form. The vet did not even see our pup. Just goes to show how its all about the money now days and less about treating the patient. Disgusted!

Absolutely horrible. My dog went in for a swollen anal gland, quote was given and I accepted and paid the 50% deposit ( even though it was double compared to 2 other vets ) but all 4 my dogs and 2 cats have only gone to Onderstepoort numerous times so I was prepared to pay more because of the relationship I had with them. When my wife had to collect our dog, i had a issue with the transfer I made to her for the outstanding 50% on the account, and I asked them telephonically if we could just take our dog home and I would come by the next day to settle the account and they refused and said the dog will stay there untill the account is paid. After a massive struggle I managed to transfer to my wife, when she arrived to collect the dog suddenly the balance was much more than quoted earlier that day, because of apparent medication and tests for cancer that got added on. I had only managed to transfer the amount to my wife that was outstanding, and yet still they refused to release my dog if she could not pay the higher amount. And refused again for me to pay the added amount the next day. This place will never again treat one of my animals, my account history with them is above the 50k mark and yet this is the attitude over a couple hundred rand and refusing to release a dog to sleep in its own bed over a quote they exceeded without prior arrangement. Never ever again.

Our fox terrier suffered severe dog bite wounds so we took him to Onderstepoort because they were the closest. Little did we know they'd be overcharging for his treatment. Over R10,000! And they don't offer any payment plans at all, and refuse to give your dog back if you don't pay EVERYTHING upfront! It's insane and way too expensive! Every time we had to take him back to get his bandages changed it was another R2000. The best part is that they didn't even give him any stitches, which he badly needed, they just had us coming back each time for clean bandages and another R2000. I ended up taking him to another vet and they immediately gave him stitches and clean bandages, charging R4500 and told us that if we had gone to them from the start it would have only cost us the R4500 and nothing more. So what a joke Onderstepoort vets is, because seems to me they only care about the money and not the animals! Shame on you! You won't ever be seeing us again.

My dog was referred to a specialist at Onderstepoort Vet Hospital for a diagnosis of a mass. Drove 4 hours and took my furry baby in for a cancer diagnosis and his first chemo treatment, and the specialist treat you like you just brought him in for an annual vaccination. Please note that although you might give a cancer diagnosis on a daily basis, I do not hear that my baby has got cancer on a daily basis. It would've been great if that were kept in consideration. The staff was great and the assisting student was amazing but the specialist was discourteous and ill-mannered. I did not see the specialist even look in the direction of my dog, nevermind touch or speak to him. It really is unneccessary to treat pasients like they are an imposition and you are doing them a massive favor. I paid thousands of rands to be there and to get the best diagnosis and treatment for my furry baby. The specialist made an already hell-ish and devastating situation worse. I sincerely hope that not all the specialists there are like that because it's a wonderful faculity and I believe they do amazing work.
