Really smooth five-week car hire in Durban. We got a large car, which was excellent, and had no issues leaving it back or on subsequent billing. The guys on the ground were super pleasant and helpful too. No complaints.
Now Lawrence goes under a new business named Pool Sparkle Specialists Ballito and still botches his work. See our review there for a new pool that failed after 11 months.
Do not touch these guys. They installed a pool for us, and it failed after 11 months! He did not stand over his warranty, and we have had the entire structure demolished and replaced at our cost. The owner claimed that it was the first time in 30 years that his pools have failed yet we found scathing reviews for his previous pool company on this site too.
We hired Lawrence of Pool Sparkle Specialists in Ballito to replace a 20-year-old pool in early 2024. After less than a year, sheets of pool lining peeled off exposing the concrete shell behind it and his 5-year warrantee vanished. We then paid for two independent engineer to come to site who concluded that the entire pool structure had failed. Cracks have appeared everywhere under the fibre glass. Our pool of less than a year must be demolished and rebuilt from scratch. Lawrence also claimed in his report that this was the first time in 30 years that the lining failed on one of his pools. Yet we found scathing reviews for his previous pool company (under K & M Pools on this site) that refer to his company as ‘***boys of Ballito’. He has refused to refund us a cent for a pool that we now have to replace entirely.
A big outdoor bin arrived with its handles broken weeks ago. Have been waiting or a collection and refund. Neither is happening. The amount of trouble we have had with the entire order and late deliveries is unbelievable. Makro is to be avoided to save your sanity.
I bought a gift set of 10 or12 herbs and spices in the Yuppiechef in Ballito Lifestyle this month. When I brought the set home, I realised their 'best before date' was within four months. I brought the set back to exchange but the dates on the other gift sets were even shorter - out of date this month. All these short-dated products were full price, not on special. However, the shop assistant insisted they didn't do returns or exchanges on 'perishables'. Apparently, it didn't matter that the 'perishables' had almost perished when I bought them. I had to wait for a manager. She gave me a blank-eyed stare and repeated the same. 'It is company policy on perishables'. I asked where the sign that stated this was displayed in the store. She said it was on the website, but I explained again that I bought the set instore. She also pointed at the QR code on my receipt. If I had scanned it, I would also have known their policy on perishables. Therefore I could have discovered their terms and conditions AFTER buying the product. After standing my ground, I received a rude shrug and a refund. The moral is to avoid the place in Ballito or carefully check the best-before dates because they seem to promote old stock and ******* customer service.
Customer services say my order is still 'out for delivery'. I ordered on February 20 2024. It is now April 19 2024 and I still have not received a refund for R1400. Customer service is a joke. I am filing a complaint with the National Consumer Commission (NCC) and I advise everyone else to do the same. This business's operating licence should be revoked.
I wish I'd checked the reviews here first. When we picked up the car in Durban Airport, they told us we had to call Avis Durban to renew the rental before 30 days were up. (The rental was 48 days long.) It seemed like a silly policy but we comp**** or tried to. We ended up ringing and ringing the Durban airport office for several days. Each time, the phone either rang out or was answered and hung up. We rang Avis Johannesburg who connected us to the same line that was never answered. In the end, we had to drive a round trip of 120km to Avis to sort the matter out at huge inconvenience. Crazy! Checking reviews, we see that is standard for Avis Durban Airport. They never answer calls. They also have no email address apart from a 'no-reply' one. Then when we dropped back the car, they alerted us to a tiny chip on the bumper which we could only see wearing our glasses. (The chip was probably there when we picked up the car, but we wouldn't have spotted a crater in the bodywork such was the teeming rain that day. We asked to see the chip repair when it’s completed, but it was made clear that won't be forthcoming. I suspect many more customers will be paying for that chip long after us.) We were charged R1800 for the chip. When the bill was emailed to us, we also saw they charged us R237 for a two-hour late return. We were there 45 minutes late and have the petrol receipt from 3 minutes away to prove it. Regardless, in most reputable places you are given an hour's grace. As we worked our way through the bill, we saw they also charged another R400+ more than the original quote for no reason at all! You have been warned. The only thing Avis excels in is shady overcharging practices and inconveniencing customers. Lesson learned.
Wow, I wish I'd checked the reviews here first. Avis Durban Airport charged us R1800 for a tiny chip on the bumper which we could only see wearing our glasses. (The chip was probably there when we picked the car up but we couldn't see anything in the teeming rain. No doubt the same chip will be paid for by every customer after us.) When the bill was emailed to us, we also saw they charged us R237 for a one-hour late return - we were not late. At the time given on the bill, we had already checked in, gone through security, had spent an hour in the lounge an hour and were about to leave to board. As we worked our way through the bill, we saw they charged another R400+ for no reason at all except the fun of it! Even worse though was the inconvenience they put us through. They told us we had to call Avis Durban airport to renew the rental before 30 days were up. (The rental was 48 days long.) A silly policy but we tried to comply. We ended up ringing and ringing for several days. The phone rang out or the line was hung up. We rang Avis Johannesburg who connected us to the same line that was never answered. Ordered online but had a nightmare with delivery from Durban to Stanger. Nothing is worth that hassle again - arranging for people to be there for scheduled deliveries that never arrived. They show up when they feel like it. Their ratings here say it all. A company that takes your money but doesn't care about customer service. Thankfully, there are lots of other options for white goods, and I will use them in future.
