After being harassed for more than a year, having my information shared with every Tom. **** and Harry. Absa still had the gall to reiterate that I should just "share" private information with them contrary to the POPI Act. No apologies, no explanation as to why my information is being shared other than they found it relevant to contact me continuously and threaten me with moving the debt to my name (they actually did do so on a WhatsApp message where they changed the name of the debtor to my name). Simply "Okay, we will try to stop this harassment.
If there was a -5 STAR it would be more appropriate. I am utterly appalled by the conduct of DMC Collection and their so-called “agents.” They have repeatedly contacted me regarding a debt allegedly owed to ABSA — a debt that has absolutely nothing to do with me. Despite my clear communication that they have the wrong person, they persist in contacting me, demanding personal details and information about a third party whom I do not know. Their behaviour has crossed every line of professionalism and legality. The agents’ tone is aggressive, intimidating, and wholly inappropriate. What is most alarming is that DMC somehow obtained my personal information from ABSA and are now using it to harass me for someone else’s debt. This raises serious data privacy and POPIA (Protection of Personal Information Act) concerns. A company tasked with debt recovery should at least possess the competence to verify debtor identities before making ******** and baseless demands. Instead, DMC Collection’s approach reflects gross negligence, lack of accountability, and possible breaches of privacy law. I strongly caution anyone dealing with DMC Collection to document all interactions, refuse to share any personal data, and report their conduct to the Information Regulator of South Africa as well as ABSA’s compliance department. DMC Collection’s practices are not only unprofessional but potentially ******* — and they deserve to be held fully accountable.
ABSA contacted me with a private response. I am deeply concerned that they are in possession of people's life information & for all intents and purposes large sums of money. This time ABSA asked me to identify myself even though my full name and surname are displayed in my email address. I am told that "I am said third party or that I should share the details of the third party/ies." The contact person handling the matter once again asked me to share personal details of a third party that they are trying to reach. This is in direct contravention of POPIA, and I face a hefty fine. They keep reiterating that they are ABSA, as if that changes the POPIA? I once again highlight that ABSA has contravened POPIA: ABSA has repeatedly shared my personal details with DMC and other third parties in relation to a debt that does not concern me. I have not consented, and no legal justification exists for such data sharing. But they have now added Unwarranted Account Queries: My credit card and all other ABSA accounts were fully settled and formally closed. But now ABSA is asking me to confirm that my accounts were settled and closed? I explained that my account could not have been successfully closed if I still owed any funds to ABSA. One of the reasons I closed my account with ABSA was as a result of the manner in which they found a loophole during COVID to not adhere to my "income protector" with all sorts of excuses. In summary: 1. ABSA has ********ly shared my personal information with third parties. 2. ABSA has requested, on a consistent basis, that I share information in breach of POPIA. 3. ABSA are now asking me about my accounts that were closed more than 4 years ago precisely because of their dishonest practices. 4. ABSA has misattributed a debt to me based solely on a surname match, or, as their "collection agents have expressed," I know the person, I must just pay, and then they can pay me. I would really like to know how 1. They know I know the details of the person and 2. When did it become law that 3rd parties can be held liable for debts they have nothing to do with 3. The best part is it's not that much; you can settle it as a good deed.... ABSA, through DMC, has harassed and defamed me with repeated, baseless demands.
DMC has been calling and emailing me to get the info of a person that I supposedly know? They cannot confirm to who the person really is by providing details I only get a name and surname. The surname happens to be the same as mine however being a cultural name I know many people with the same name. I was told it is irrelevant I should supply all the info of all the persons with said name. I was contravening the law (could not site the law). I was then threatened that if I did not share said details I would be liable for the debt. When asked how they got my details I was told it is private and privileged information which they cannot share. Subsequently the emails all contain the original debtors first name and surname no second name no identity number no address. However I am expected “obligated” to share details of my entire contact register in contravention of POPI Act. I was told POPI Act does not apply because ABSA has given my details and therefore I am responsible. Subsequently to the initial conversations I have now been told the debt has been transferred to my name? These are amazing debt collectors that ABSA have appointed. Also inquiring where DMC is based I get varied answers Johannesburb, East London
ABSA is supplying my personal details to a collection agent DMC for a debt that has nothing to do with me. The only consistency is that I have the same surname as the debtor. 1. I have told both Absa & DMC on numerous occasions I am not the debtor. 2. I was told I should share details of all the people with similar name and should prove that I am not the said person? 3. Supplying private information is in contravention of POPI Act? But I was informed the onslaught would not stop from DMC & I could be held liable if I did not share the said information? ABSA also contacted me with another story of their info was *******ed & trying to reach said debtor/s. But they could not supply more info unless I supp**** the info? However I find it extremely odd that despite POPI companies like ABSA and DMC are a law unto themselves.
The worst service I have received to date, if your home is insured with them then you are in for a surprise and really consider changing it immediately. I am currently abroad and my geyser has gone. I have been calling and emailing every single listed number or email to no avail. I am passed from pillar to post, the Call center people have sent me to Funeral Cover, Car Insurance etc. after holding for 60min. The email and App also does not work and reverts a person back to Call center for any problems. The head of Insurance Johan Van Gruening, Shakeel and Linah are so important that they can't even respond to an email and they clearly won't get back to a person. It goes without saying that they set the tone and example for the entire division I suspect it is one of those companies where "Hurry up and make the client wait" is the work ethic established. I strongly urge any Standard Bank client or person considering Standard Bank Insurance to save yourself endless frustrations and money and use another insurance broker. There is zero effort on their part to resolve a matter I have now had to pay an excessive water bill for a geyser that burst but not only that I have spent +R1000s in international roaming costs to call the call center numbers and to no avail.
Still getting call from these guys for a debt that is not mine or remotely has anything to do with me? I keep getting harassed by debt-in for a debt owed by a third party. Debt-in wants me to share the information of third parties for them to collects debts. Furthermore, FNB has been apparently sharing my details with DEBT-IN and DEBT-IN has informed me that I MUST share the details of said THIRD-PARTY under threat of harassment?
Unfortunately, First National Bank, gave me a call and simply frustrated the matter further. The crux of the matter is that I was informed by DEBT-IN that my details were shared by FNB. But the debt that DEBT-IN is seeking to collect is not my debt or even has anything to do with myself. DEBT-IN want me to give them the contact details for the person/s responsible for the debt. My worry is why is FNB sharing my details?
FNB has seen fit to share my details with DEBT-IN for a debt that is not mine and has nothing to do with me. I have been told by DEBT-IN that I am related to the debtor and must supply contact information and further personal details or else DEBT-IN will continue to pester me!! FNB is unfortunately the bank I am banking with?
Keep getting pestered and harassed by DEBT-IN in respect of a debt of a relative, FNB have contracted these guys to collect a debt. After telling them numerous times this is not my debt and or details. I was told simply FNB shared my details, and I must share the relatives' details or they will continue to call.
