I recently conversed with Eudene Jacobs on a new policy. I honestly found her to be patient. well-informed, efficient but also warm and friendly. It is honestly what I have come to expect from Outsurance in general during my two years or so interacting with them. Thanks for patience and quickly executing my teething problems with my new policy.
It’s a real shame because this place could be so much more. The real. Problem are the waiters. Predatory (harass for tip), poor service and arrogant. They seem to run the place with no management oversight. I go here sporadically these days, used to be my local. interaction with the waiters is always laborious and an issue. I once ordered a drink after paying. And the waiter just didn’t bother bringing me the order as I’d paid and tipped already. But the venue is not bad at all. But it is badly run. New management would do this place a world of good.
good solid fibre service... But their phone customer service is seriously worse than dealing with a south african government department in my experience. Unbelievably bad telephone service. I am moving home and am transferring between open serve and TT Connect. TT Connect offers a far more expensive service for a lower download speed than openserve. I wanted to simply know if TT Connect offered promotions in the past. That would help me decide whether I would pay a fixed installation fee and go on a month-to-month contract (and wait for a possible promotion). Or put me down for an annual contract (and pay R249 for installation). I was on a 34-minute descent into bureaucratic hell where one operative from moving home put me through to another, then sales - who were the ones who could offer the information - but immediately put me back to moving home. A gentleman in accounts was helpful in the middle of it all. When I eventually got through to sales, "Ashton" offered to help and then the call was cut (got to say I laughed at this point... guess it wasn't worth the commission he wasn't making to give advice:). MWEB is great all goes to plan and is standard. Their tech team in the past has been helpful. But if you need anything above and beyond that involves a sales issue etc - might as well be dealing with a South African government department.

Recently, my 24mm-70mm Canon f2.8 lens suffered a communication error again (the dreaded Canon Error 1 message) came up on the body. Being relatively new to Joburg, I phoned around to see the best price and service I felt I could get in a reasonable time. On a previous work trip to Joburg I had used a well-known camera repair shop in Randburg, but they no longer serviced any Canon equipment and directed me to Canon SA itself. As anyone who has has had to repair a bit of Canon equipment knows, it takes forever at Canon and is a good few times more than the price of a solid repair service done elsewhere. In the end, after a few call-rounds I found Emmanuel's business, Multcam, down in Joburg CBD in Marshalltown. Within a few minutes of discussing the issue on the phone (coupled with over two decades of experience in breaking and having to service camera equipment), I instinctively knew Emmanuel not only had deep knowledge to do the repair but sounded honest and upfront. I overcame the normal intrepidation many of us surbuban types in Joburg have of travelling into CBD and went to the shop in Kruis Street. The shop itself is a wonderful, cozy and well-equipped ode to camera equipment of past glory, displaying bodies and lenses from a few decades ago even. Emmanuel was professional throughout. I got wapp messages informing me of progress all the way, and when I went to pick up the lens - after a good solid test - it was ready to go again. There is a 5-day-turnaround for camera repair jobs (that ended up being 6 but only because of delays in supplies reaching the camera shop) that Emmanuel strudily adheres even after inquiring. This might irk some pros on a quick turnaround time base, but to be honest, I appreciated the straight up information. Emmanuel doesn't seem one to promise and then not deliver. And Emmanuel required 75% upfront, but given the fact it was half the price I had to pay doing exactly the same job on the same lens 4 years ago in Cape Town, I understood that most of that has to go on supplies given the smaller margins. In fact, if a repair job doesn't require parts, it is the normal 50% deposit as Emmanuel informed me. And to be honest, for me, looking at the bigger picture and in the long run, I seem to have had an excellent job done, at a very fair price. In fact, given I had the same problem fixed on the same lens from a reputable repair company in Cape Town, I would say well worth the wait and trip into cbd. Emmanuel was even able to identify why the lens had needed to be repaired again after only 4 years with the same problem. To get technical: The rail on the lens ribbon, not having been set back properly last time and had slowly eaten away at the ribbon over the last 4 years (Cape Town... looks good but twice the price and half the quality:). Anyways - Multicam have found a loyal customer in me. Glad I found my go-to shop for all camera repairs inJoburg (and trust me, the way I treat my equipment, I'm sure Emmanuel will be seeing me again very soon:).
Ordered a couple of waterproof rocker switches for an outdoor light on a 4x4 one early Monday morning. I only realised the old switch on my rear light was worn just before a big trip. I bought the item from Botshop through an online shopping portal that gave delivery scheduled for a week later. I thought I would call to gently probe whether the delivery could be expedited. I only asked if delivery could at least happen that same week. Without asking, Botshop, cancelled their normal courier service (that almost def would have delivered that week anyway) and ordered a sameday courier service... without even asking them to do so! Just to make sure it arrived with plenty of time. Amazing service. Highly recommended.
Outstanding service again from the peeps at TLN Parts. Relocated and reinvented, the father-son team of Regan and Dudley again did an excellent job on my Land Rover Puma 90 2.4 recently. Doing a comprehensive pre-expedition overhaul and picking up on problems that could have cost me dear on the long unforgiving African road. I knew the brake master had to be done, but literally, on the way to the garage, the power dropped alarmingly. It turned out the turbo had to be replaced too. And had it not, might have caused catastrophic damage to the engine eventually if it had failed. I also had too much play on the steering after hitting every pothole (and in Joburg there are a few of those I tell you:). An overhaul of the suspension was also done. All are reasonably priced at a decent hourly fee and corresponding hours. The vehicle drives really well now. Confident it won’t let me done. Everything was explained and thoroughly reviewed. And the job done is a reasonable time. I had in fact met the team when I first got to Joburg last year. Wet behind the ears in the city, I was hit by another vehicle on the side at a junction and the insurance company tried to write off the vehicle. With Regan and Dudley, we successfully argued that all of the mechanical repair work was unnecessary (only the body had been affected really). Not only did they save my vehicle from corporate clutches. But did an amazing rebuild on her too. If you’re in town or on outsider desperate for a garage to do those expedition overhauls on your Landies in Joburg. There is only one place I can advise (and I’ve been to a few and have some stories to tell that I will save for another day:). Trustworthy and impeccable work at reasonable prices.
Excellent. Above and beyond. Security and More is the ultimate example of why suspicion of online shopping in has now turned to enthusiasm and my main method of purchasing - especially more expensive items. I bought an AllGrand 12V 100ah Battery from them. I was able to source the cheapest available in RSA that I could see from Security and More - a good 25% cheaper compared to larger outlets in some cases. I ordered on a Saturday and realised only after I had completed the purchase that I had made a mistake on the address. Having been traumatised by past experiences - where a difference in billing and shipping address caused my delivery to be delievered to Cape Town (I'm Jozi-based)... twice!! - I panicked a bit... Monday morning the customer support team gave assurance and swift assisatnce on the matter - and sent an email update to confirm. An extra delivery charge was added to my purchase - smthg that was made crystal clear at the point of purchase - but was still less than I thought would be and still kept the battery competitive and cheaper than all other competitors. Following payment, the battery was dispatched and arrived mid-afternoon... on the same Monday!! Thanks! Just a shame I'm not into the whole security purchases - can't you expand into electronics? I'd be one of your main customers:))
I was moved to write a review for Ashton and Batteries and More even though technically haven't yet actually used their services or buy a product through them per say. In fact, the reason for my review is that - because of the knowledgeable, and deeply honest advice they gave - I ended up realising that I didn't need to buy a new battery for now from them. After the recent rounds of loadshedding, I was convinced my back-up Deltec 12V 105 amp semi-cycle battery (run by a Santakups inverter) needed replacing. The periods it was giving charge was decreasing rapidly, even though I'd only bought the battery 9 months ago. I thought I'd take the opp to just upgrade to the highly reliable deep cycle Australian Atlas batteries that Batteries and More sell (and come with great reviews in gen), even though they are more pricey. Ashton though instantly informed that the Deltec battery was probably fine. 9 months for (the no-less reliable American Deltecs), was def not likely to see its performance drop so rapidly. He advised me to either return the battery and replace under guarantee where I had bought it or to bring it in and he would charge it up for me on an industrial charger, as the problem was probably with the inverter that was unable to charge the Deltec in between bouts of loadshedding. A default problem with all such inverters. Batteries and More could easily have sold me the Atlas and taken in the (fully functional) Deltec I had as exchange (and probably sold it on as well for a tidy sum). Instead they chose to advise me correctly even at the loss of a lucrative sale. Such upfront, brutally honest selfless advice is few and far between in this world and thought it deserved a review. I can only commend Ashton and team for their obvious commitment to great service and enthusiasm for what they do. While I didn't make the purchase, one day soon, I will need to replace either the Deltec on my back-up or the semi-cycle battery I have in my Landie. I know there is only one place I will go to do so. Thank you
I am writing this review mainly because of what I read on hellopeter (and elsewhere) about loot.co.za that heavily influenced my decision not to use them initially. I especially consult review sites when it comes to online shopping. And having seen review after review criticise loot - some calling them a "scam" - I felt it necessary to convey my own (two) experiences once I did decide to take the dip (with much initial trepidation it must be said) seeing as my own experience was anything but. I had a long book list I wanted to buy. Many of the items were out of stock elsewhere and many had to be imported anyway. Loot firstly was by far the cheapest. On 5 books, the saving compared to other online shopping sites and outlets was about R7/800. I held off ordering given the bad reviews and the fact they were so much cheaper made me suspicious. In the end, it proved too hard to go anywhere else. The books would take too long or were way too expensive. So I took a chance and ordered. From the start. loot was very professional. They stated the length of time they thought the books would take. Which was three and a bit weeks. Given the problems I knew existed in sourcing the books I wanted myself, I understood and accepted the arrival date. In the end though, they arrived a good few days sooner than the expected delivery date. I then ordered an accessory for my Garmin GPS. It turned out to be the wrong part that was delivered (again, a couple of days before the specified delivery date). The spec online was not clear exactly if the item was for my model or not. Apart from that. When I requested to return the item, within a day, it had been booked in for return and within a week and a half, a full refund was issued. I cannot but sing the praises of loot.co.za I am sorry for others' experiences with them. But from my limited interaction with loot, they have been nothing but an exemplary outfit and professional. It is possible that past service issues have been ironed out. Based on my own experiences, they were reliable, cheap, and able to source difficult-to-obtain items relatively quickly - certainly compared to their main rivals. And issued refunds quickly and efficiently. I would not hesitate to use them again. One of the better online shopping services by far.
