★★★★★ Exemplary service at SAPS Somerset West I received professional assistance from a friendly and smiling police officer who explained everything clearly and helped me fill out the documents. I have dealt with the South African police several times before, but the service at this station is exemplary. I wish it were like this everywhere!

I'm very disgusted with the Somerset West police. On Saturday night between 11 and 12 my cellphone got ******. I manage to get my cellphone back but had to pay a Nigerian guy R500 to get it back.so I went to the Somerset West police station just get the gates locked with no intercoms of ringing bells. The I called the persons inside wich was walking inside but with no luck nobody responded...well I got my cell phone and lost money in the process...so my question is....what if it was a ****** of serious accident or any other serious crime I had to report...what would've happened....well done SAPS Somerset West..for your outstanding *** service

There is something seriously wrong with the way the Police Station handles incoming calls and messages. I received an sms last week concerning a case I submitted. I tried to contact the responsible person at the given number 021-8501302, many times last week but the phone just rings indefinitely. On Monday morning I had no more luck and tried a number 021-8501300 and managed to speak to someone. They couldn't locate the person handling my case so I asked that he phones me back. It is now Thursday and no phone call! Yesterday I phoned the 300 number again and asked to speak to the Head of the Police Station. The phone was allowed to ring indefinitely - unprofessional! Instead of coming back to me and saying she is not answering, can I take a message, the caller is just abandoned. I suspect that the switchboard people are poorly trained. and have no idea what professional means. This is not a new phenomenon - it's part and parcel of the service you get from the Somerset West Police Station.

I was attacked in my home in Steynsrust on June 30 after handing out bits of money and food to people coming to the front door. One person, a young man, abused the situation by following me when I went upstairs to collect an item. As a result of blows to my eyes one eye had reconstructive surgery at Vergelegen Mediclinic where I stayed for several days. The total medical bill was about R 90 000. In addition my laptop, cellphone and purse was stolen. A charge was laid at the Somerset West police: CAS 1/7/2022. Last week I tried to contact the person assigned to my case to establish whether any progress had been made for 3 consecutive days, and messages left to contact me had no effect. I then asked for the head of the police station to contact me, and even that no effect. To my mind the behaviour of the police is highly unprofessional. The person concerned is a threat to the community as he is clearly willing to attack elderly people in their homes (I am 80). He has been to my door before and comes from Macassar. I was told by the lady I spoke to, more than once, that the policeman on my case was “very busy”. Well, if he.is that busy he shouldn’t be assigned to my case, as the chances that he will achieve anything is about nil. W A Richter.

I have been trying since 28 September to lay charges against a person for blatant fraud and theft. At the time I went to the police station and a fairly inexperienced young man rewrote the details I had printed out, as is their custom, for more than an hour. When I did not get a case number a few days later I contacted the head of the station and gave the precise date and time the complaint was laid. That apparently did not help to find the docket, so I was advised to come to the station again, and spend another hour for the details to be rewritten with a more senior person. Again no case number was forthcoming. Over some months my enquiries led to nothing, and I was just sent from one person to another. Part of the problem seemed to relate to a bizarre suggestion by the state prosecutor that perhaps the matter was only a civil case. Well certainly not, if one has the reading ability and comprehension of someone who has passed matric. Earlier this year this passing the buck game continued. At one stage I had been given contact details of two colonels and one captain. Despite several messages left on cell phones, and with police personnel, no one came back to me. Last month I received a phone call from a lower-ranked official saying that a case number has been assigned, but no person had been assigned to investigate the case. Also no sms, which is customary, and no subsequent contact after that. The events described above amounts to a contempt towards the public, in particular the lack of integrity of senior officials to respond to messages left. The situation to my mind is scandalous. Small wonder criminality thrives in this country.
