I had heard and read a few reviews regarding the restaurant, and as it was our wedding anniversary, my wife and I decided to visit. We did not have a reservation but thought we would try none the less. We spoke to the receptionist, who told us "the restaurant was fully booked and she had no space". When she added they could make a plan - I generally usually leave any restaurant at this point, but given that we could see only a single table of 2, I guessed people were coming later. We had lunch and when we left the restaurant was still 70% empty. The menu provided a limited selection - yes, it is COVID and thus expected, but for a restaurant that was fully booked for lunch, the options were limited. We were seated with a view of the valley (the surrounds are stunning); however, the window between the rest of the restaurant and us was not cleaned properly - not what I would expect given the status of the restaurant and the ratings it receives - as for being fully booked, the balcony section which was also 80% empty except for a table of 9 and 2, later adding two tables, but still only 30% fully - not fully booked it appeared? We ordered an excellent wine, along with a main (the only beef option on the menu) and a cheese platter. The food was average; nothing was exceptional at all. I am not sure, for a restaurant with this high praise from others, it cannot be the same place unless people had visited the tasting room first. I had to ask for another knife as I could not cut through my steak easily. The potatoes were nice, and the sauce also, but as I said, very average when compared to other restaurants. The cheese platter was sp**** but at least had more flavour. The highlight was the welcome bread. A restaurant that regularly gets 5 stars does not serve food at such an ordinary level - we were left thoroughly disappointed, especially when we would go 1 km down the road for dinner and have a significantly better meal and experience. I will not be going back; there are others who I would risk an experience on, even if they are also average before returning.

I made a reservation at Tokara-It was my birthday celebration, and I asked 2 friends to join me, since we had just celebrated their birthday at Newton Johnson restaurant in Hermanus, and had an incredible experience. Previously I brought an overseas guest to Tokara, my partner is vegan and I requested a meal for her. The meal was so impressive-our guest could not stop talking about it, her vegan meal a special creation that made us all compliment the chef. Since then we have only recommended Tokara and hence me thinking it to be an obvious venue to celebrate my own birthday.

My experience however left me feeling utterly disappointed ! It felt as if we were part of the December rush-no preparation re a vegan meal, all the meals ordered were average-it lacked flavour, was cold, and extremely pricey. Beef was sinewy, poorly cooked - not to mention paying R75 for a bowl of strawberries& 6 raspberries! The obvious thing was to complain, but bear in mind this was a birthday-not the place to spoil my day and make a scene in front of my friends who have just treated us at another FAR superior restaurant. I was asked to rate the meal-its a week later and I am still waiting 4 a reply !
